Preventing and Managing Vomiting from Traditional Chinese Medicine Decoctions

December 4, 2023

Why do some people vomit after taking traditional Chinese medicine decoctions? This is because the traditional Chinese medicine formulas are composed of multiple Chinese herbs, each of which has different tastes such as bitterness, spiciness, sourness, numbness, saltiness, and astringency. When these tastes are combined in the decoction, it can create an unpleasant smell that is difficult to swallow. Especially for patients with sensitive taste buds, it is easy to experience nausea and vomiting.

How to prevent or stop vomiting caused by taking traditional Chinese medicine decoctions?

One method is to use small frequent doses. Start by having the patient take a small sip to test it out. If they vomit, let them spit it out. After doing this two or three times, they generally can adapt, and then they can take the whole dose without vomiting.

Another method is to use large rapid doses. After the decoction has cooled down, take a deep breath and drink the decoction in one go. It is better not to pause during the process to avoid triggering the taste and causing vomiting. Immediately rinse the mouth with cold water and then drink a small amount of cold water. Chewing a piece of gum can also help remove the taste of the medicine.

Another method is to use medication intervention. Take 20 grams of licorice and decoct it in water. If there is no vomiting, then take the decoction. For medicines containing rhubarb, honeysuckle, seaweed, or croton, this method should not be used to avoid adverse effects. Take 6 grams of Bai Zhi powder and put it on the tongue, then lick and swallow. If vomiting continues after taking the medicine, add 1-2 tablespoons of ginger juice to the decoction, or drink some ginger soup after taking the medicine.
