Ginseng has a cold nature, with a slightly bitter and sweet taste. It can nourish lung Yin, clear heat, and generate body fluids. It is used for conditions such as internal heat, deficiency heat fatigue, and dry mouth. Compared to ginseng, ginseng is nourishing without causing dryness. It is often used to enhance the function of the central nervous system, protect the cardiovascular system, and improve immunity.
Sanqi has a warm nature, with a sweet and slightly bitter taste. It can promote blood circulation, dissolve stasis, reduce swelling, and relieve pain. It is known as "unexchangeable gold" and "southern miraculous herb". There is a saying that ginseng is the best for replenishing Qi, while Sanqi is the best for replenishing blood. Sanqi is commonly used to treat various blood disorders, such as hematemesis, hematochezia, and metrorrhagia. However, long-term use of Sanqi powder can deplete body fluid and cause Yin deficiency.
Whether these two herbs can be used together depends on the individual and their specific condition. The combination of these two herbs can nourish Yin, promote Qi circulation, and promote blood circulation. However, it may have certain side effects for patients with deficiency of middle Jiao Yang Qi, cold and dampness in the stomach, Yin deficiency and internal heat, and stagnation transforming into fire. For example, for patients with good gastrointestinal function and a pattern of Qi and Yin deficiency with blood stasis, they can take both herbs at the same time. But for patients who frequently experience discomfort in the stomach, ginseng may hinder the stomach, and Sanqi powder may damage the stomach, especially for patients with gastric ulcers, long-term use may lead to gastric bleeding. At the same time, due to the blood-promoting and stasis-dissolving effects of Sanqi powder, it should be used with caution in pregnant women and patients with fresh wounds without blood stasis.
If both herbs are used for brewing, the usual daily dosage of ginseng is 2 grams to 5 grams, and Sanqi powder is 3 grams to 6 grams, divided into 2 to 3 doses. Taking them on an empty stomach is beneficial for drug absorption, but it may have a greater impact on the stomach.
