Cupping Therapy: Correct Methods and Precautions for Effective Relief

December 30, 2023

Cupping therapy can relieve muscle pain, alleviate fatigue, and is widely accepted by many people. However, when doing cupping at home, it is important to follow the correct method. Otherwise, it may not only be ineffective but also harm the body.

Method of cupping

Before cupping, the cup should be washed and dried. Then, the patient should lie down or sit comfortably, exposing the area to be cupped. Next, ignite the cup. Generally, one hand holds the cup while the other hand holds the ignited probe. The operation should be quick. After shaking the ignited probe in the cup a few times, withdraw it and quickly place the cup on the treatment area. While the fire is still burning, press the cup tightly against the affected area. Do not wait for the fire to go out, as this will make the cup too loose and not conducive to drawing out dampness. There should be a feeling of the cup tightly sucking onto the body. It is important to note not to heat the edge of the cup to avoid burns. Usually, the cup can be removed after 10 to 15 minutes. When removing the cup, do not forcefully pull or twist it. The proper way is to tilt the cup to one side with one hand while pressing the skin with the other hand, allowing air to enter the cup through the gap, and the cup will naturally detach from the skin.

Precautions

Do not cup the navel, precordial area, areas with delicate skin, damaged areas, scarred areas, nipples, or protruding bones. It is also best not to cup over old cupping marks until they have completely faded. After cupping, do not take a bath immediately. The skin is in a state of "injury" after cupping and is sensitive and fragile. Taking a bath at this time can easily cause skin damage, inflammation, etc. During cupping, avoid direct wind blowing to prevent catching a cold. If blisters occur after cupping, if there are more than 3 blisters in each cup, apply burn ointment in a timely manner or seek medical treatment.

Indications for diseases

For lower back pain: cupping at the painful area of the lower back and Weizhong acupoint (in the middle of the back of the knee), 10 to 15 minutes, once a day.
