The Medicinal Perspective: Kelp vs. Kombu

November 29, 2023

Kelp is the leafy body of the plant Laminaria japonica Aresch, belonging to the family Laminariaceae. In the book "A Study on the Names and Realities of Plants," written by Wu Qijun in the Qing Dynasty, the names of kelp and kombu, which are commonly used by the people, are confused. However, from a medicinal perspective, the term "kombu" should be used. In "A Study on the Names and Realities of Plants," the term "kombu" refers to Ecklonia kurome Okam., which is now commonly known as black kombu in the Chinese pharmaceutical industry.
