Pediatric Vomiting: Massage Techniques and Diet Therapy

November 20, 2023

The occurrence of vomiting in children is mostly due to the upward reversal of stomach qi. Therefore, in the treatment of vomiting with massage, the focus is on harmonizing the stomach and reducing the upward reversal. Let's take a look at the illustrated guide to pediatric vomiting massage.

Causes and Symptoms of Pediatric Vomiting

Causes: The invasion of hot evil into the stomach forces the stomach qi to reverse and cause vomiting.

Symptoms: Vomiting immediately after eating, sour and foul-smelling vomit, body heat and thirst, restlessness, foul and hard stool or constipation, yellow and red urine, red lips and dry tongue, yellow and greasy coating, and purple fingerprints.

Pediatric Vomiting Massage Prescription

Treatment principles: Clear heat, harmonize the stomach, reduce reversal, and stop vomiting.

Massage prescription: Clear the spleen meridian, clear the large intestine meridian, retreat the six bowels, push the heavenly pillar bone, push the transverse stripes towards the plank gate, move the internal eight trigrams, and push down the seven vertebral bones.

Explanation of massage prescription: Clear the spleen meridian and clear the large intestine meridian to clear the heat in the middle burner. Push the transverse stripes towards the plank gate to reduce reversal and stop vomiting. Retreat the six bowels to enhance the effect of clearing heat. Move the internal eight trigrams to broaden the chest and regulate qi, harmonize the stomach, and stop vomiting. Push down the seven vertebral bones to clear heat and promote bowel movements, allowing the stomach qi to descend.

Pediatric Vomiting Massage Techniques

Clear the spleen meridian: The location of the spleen meridian is from the fingertip to the root of the thumb on the radial side, also known as the spiral surface. Push straight from the fingertip to the root of the thumb on the radial side with the finger extended. Repeat 300-500 times.

Clear the large intestine meridian: The large intestine meridian is located on the radial side of the index finger, pushing from the tiger's mouth to the fingertip. Repeat 300-500 times.

Retreat the six bowels: The location of the six bowels is along the ulnar side of the forearm, from Yinshi (Shenmen) to Doulao (Shao Hai), forming a straight line. Use the fingertip of the middle finger and index finger, push from the elbow joint to the palm root. Repeat 100-500 times.

Push the heavenly pillar bone: The heavenly pillar bone is located in the middle of the back of the neck, from the hairline to the second cervical vertebra, forming a straight line. Push straight from top to bottom using the thumb or index finger. Push for 3-5 minutes.

Push the transverse stripes towards the plank gate: The plank gate is located on the palm side of the hand between the metacarpophalangeal joints. Rub and push 100-300 times between the plank gate and the transverse stripes.

Move the internal eight trigrams: Move the internal eight trigrams from the Gan meridian to the Dui meridian once, in clockwise and counterclockwise directions, 300-500 times.

Push down the seven vertebral bones: The seven vertebral bones are located in a straight line from the fourth lumbar vertebra to the end of the coccyx. Push downward 200-400 times, until the skin turns red.

Cook the soup with washed polished rice, then add an appropriate amount of rock sugar and cook for a while. Feed the child twice a day for three consecutive days.

Pediatric Vomiting Nursing Care

1. Children should have regular and moderate meals, avoid overeating, and avoid eating raw and cold fruits and vegetables.

2. When a child vomits, they should sit up or lie on their side to prevent vomit from entering the airways.

3. If vomiting is frequent and the child shows signs of dehydration, seek medical attention. Massage can be used as an adjunctive therapy.
