Pediatric Tuina on Tianzhu: Technique, Effects, and Clinical Applications

Location of Tianzhu in Children

Tianzhu is located in the middle of the posterior hairline to the intersection of the first cervical vertebra and the second cervical vertebra.

Technique of Pediatric Tuina on Tianzhu

Using the thumb or index finger, apply downward pressure for 100-300 times, known as pushing Tianzhu. Use the edge of a spoon dipped in water and scrape downward until there is slight subcutaneous bruising, known as scraping Tianzhu.

Effects of Tianzhu in Children

Expelling wind and clearing heat, regulating qi and reducing counterflow, inducing sweat and relieving pain. It is mainly used to treat fever, cold, and other external wind-cold symptoms, vomiting, and hiccups caused by stomach qi counterflow.

Clinical Applications of Tianzhu in Children

Pushing and scraping Tianzhu can reduce counterflow and stop vomiting, dispel wind and disperse cold. It is often used to treat nausea and vomiting, fever caused by external pathogenic factors, severe neck pain, etc.

It is also commonly used to treat symptoms such as restlessness, irritability, noise sensitivity, vomiting, and abdominal distension caused by stomach heat counterflow, as well as coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, and throat pain caused by lung heat.

For local pain, stiffness in the neck, and lack of sweating, it is often combined with other acupoints.

Scraping Tianzhu can also treat heat stroke and other conditions.

Complementary Applications of Tianzhu in Children

When treating nausea and vomiting, it is often used together with Hengmen and rubbing Zhongwan. When treating external fever and severe pain, it is often used together with Fengchi and pinching Ershanmen.
