Pediatric Spinal Pinching: Timing, Indications, Contraindications, and Precautions

November 17, 2023

The spinal pinching technique in pediatric massage has a good effect in treating diseases and strengthening the body. The method is simple and convenient to operate. However, in order to ensure the therapeutic effect of spinal pinching, the operator not only needs to learn the correct operating method, but also needs to grasp the timing of pediatric massage and understand relevant precautions.

Timing for Pediatric Spinal Pinching

The most suitable timing for spinal pinching is in the morning or on an empty stomach.

If the child has just finished eating, wait for 30 minutes before performing spinal pinching. Generally, perform spinal pinching once a day for 6 days as a course of treatment.

If the child's health condition does not improve significantly and further treatment is needed, the second course of treatment can be conducted with an interval of half a month to one month.

Indications for Spinal Pinching

Spinal pinching technique can dredge meridians, promote the circulation of qi and blood, improve the function of organs, and enhance the body's ability to resist diseases. It is particularly effective in invigorating the spleen and stomach. It is commonly used to treat pediatric malnutrition, food stagnation, loss of appetite, diarrhea, abdominal pain, enuresis, vomiting, vitamin D deficiency (rickets), constipation, colds, coughs, and other diseases. It can also be used as a method of health massage to promote pediatric development and enhance children's resistance.

Contraindications for Spinal Pinching

Children with certain diseases that affect the operation of the spine or serious illnesses are not suitable for spinal pinching.

1. Children with burns, scalds, open wounds on the back, or blood diseases should not undergo spinal pinching, as the technique may cause local bleeding and worsen infection.

2. If a child has a serious heart disease, spinal pinching may aggravate the condition or even lead to unexpected risks due to the child's crying and agitation during the operation. Therefore, such children should not undergo spinal pinching.

3. If a child is suffering from certain acute febrile diseases such as measles, pneumonia, or bacterial dysentery, the effect of spinal pinching on these diseases is not significant. Therefore, parents should seek medical attention for their children in a timely manner to prevent worsening of the condition.

4. If a child has certain bleeding disorders, spinal pinching or the child's distress may aggravate the local or systemic bleeding tendency. Therefore, spinal pinching is not suitable in such cases.

Selection of Medium for Spinal Pinching

1. Red Flower Oil: This is the most commonly used medium. It has the functions of promoting blood circulation, dispelling wind, promoting meridian flow, and relieving pain. It is suitable for pediatric colds, itching, and other conditions. Red Flower Oil is a good choice for lubrication during spinal pinching, as it has a mild nature and does not cause significant irritation to the child's skin.

2. Ginger Juice: Ginger juice extracted from fresh ginger can be used as a medium for spinal pinching. It has the functions of warming the meridians, dispersing cold, and relieving surface symptoms. It is suitable for treating colds, headaches, and abdominal pain caused by chilling.

3. White Wine: White wine has the functions of dispelling cold, promoting meridian flow, and opening orifices. It can lower body temperature in feverish patients and can be used for pediatric fever and injuries caused by falling.

4. Talcum Powder: Talcum powder has the functions of clearing heat, removing dampness, preventing damage, and relieving itching. It is commonly used in pediatric spinal pinching during the summer.

5. Egg White: Egg white has the effects of invigorating the spleen, aiding digestion, nourishing the skin, and cooling body temperature. It is suitable for treating pediatric colds, food accumulation, and other conditions.

6. Sesame Oil: Sesame oil has the effects of dispelling wind and heat, nourishing blood, and invigorating the spleen. It is commonly used in pediatric malnutrition, weak spleen and stomach, and weak muscles and skin.

7. Peppermint Water: Peppermint water has the effects of cooling and dispersing heat, and relieving summer heat. It is suitable for treating all types of heat conditions, especially during the summer. Peppermint water can also expel external wind and heat toxins. However, due to its strong stimulant nature, applying it to the skin may cause a sensation of heat. Therefore, it should be used less frequently on delicate skin, especially for infants and young children.

Precautions for Spinal Pinching

1. The operator's nails should be trimmed flat, and hands should be washed with warm water before and after treatment.

2. Before the operation, apply the medium to the spinal pinching area to reduce the friction and make the skin smooth. During spinal pinching, do not apply excessive force to prevent the child from experiencing pain, which may hinder the treatment.

3. After spinal pinching, the child should drink a glass of warm water to facilitate metabolism.

4. The duration of each spinal pinching session should be within 30 minutes, with a maximum of 40 minutes.

5. After spinal pinching, let the child lie down and rest for 10 minutes. If sweating occurs, wipe it off in a timely manner to prevent catching a cold from drafts.

6. After spinal pinching, avoid consuming acidic, spicy, greasy, and hard-to-digest foods. Drink plenty of warm water and diluted saltwater to enhance metabolism.
