Pain and Solutions: Understanding Yinlingquan Acupoint and Its Functions

November 15, 2023

Yinlingquan belongs to the spleen meridian of foot taiyin. Sometimes, massaging this acupoint may cause pain. This phenomenon may be a warning signal for the body's health. So what does it mean when pressing Yinlingquan causes pain?

The reasons for pain when pressing Yinlingquan

Yinlingquan is the meeting point of the spleen meridian. If the qi and blood of the spleen meridian are obstructed by dampness, it will cause pain when pressing Yinlingquan.

In addition, compression from lumbar disc herniation can also cause pain when pressing Yinlingquan. Once there is pain, it indicates that the meridian where Yinlingquan is located is not smooth enough and needs to be unblocked to relieve the pain.

Solutions for pain when pressing Yinlingquan

Massage method

Yinlingquan is located on the inner side of the lower leg, in the depression below the posterior aspect of the medial malleolus. Massaging this acupoint can effectively relieve pain.

Massage method: Sit or lie down, and use both thumbs to knead Yinlingquan with even force. If there is a sour, numb, hot, or radiating sensation at the acupoint, it means that the stimulation has reached the deep layer of the muscle tissue. At this time, maintain a certain level of pressure and use the thumbs to tap the local muscles. Massage for 5-10 minutes each time, pressing 15-20 times per minute, 2-3 times a day.

Moxibustion method

Light the moxa stick and place it about 3 centimeters above the acupoint, with a warm sensation on the skin but without burning pain. Each moxibustion session should last 10-15 minutes, with localized redness as the indicator.

The functions of Yinlingquan

Yinlingquan belongs to the spleen meridian and is an important acupoint for dispelling dampness and eliminating pathogenic factors from the body. Regular stimulation of this acupoint has the effects of invigorating the spleen, dispelling dampness, relaxing tendons, activating collaterals, promoting blood circulation, and removing blood stasis.

The roles of Yinlingquan

1. Phlegm-dampness accumulation in the body is often caused by spleen deficiency and poor transformation and transportation of water and dampness, leading to obesity. Regularly massaging and stimulating Yinlingquan can promote bowel movements, dispel dampness, and aid in weight loss.

2. Yinlingquan is the acupoint where the qi of the spleen meridian flows. It is an important acupoint for invigorating the spleen, dispelling dampness, and promoting diuresis. It is mainly used to treat conditions such as edema, urinary retention, incontinence, penile pain, female genital pain, and nocturnal emission.

How to locate Yinlingquan

Yinlingquan is located on the inner side of the lower leg, below the medial malleolus and opposite to Yanglingquan.

Locating the acupoint: On the inner side of the knee, at the level of the lower margin of the medial malleolus.
