Understanding and Treating Acne in Traditional Chinese Medicine

December 29, 2023

Traditional Chinese medicine has a long history of treating acne. Most traditional treatments focus on the lungs and stomach, mainly targeting acne in adolescence. However, many people do not understand acne, so they may have acne for a long time without knowing what the disease actually is. Therefore, there is a saying in Chinese medicine that acne treatment relies on regulation. In order to bid farewell to acne completely, it is necessary to first understand the clinical manifestations of acne in order to better prevent and treat it.

The main clinical manifestations of acne:

1. Papules: Small red papules the size of millet to soybeans appear on the cheeks, forehead, back, upper chest, and other areas. The number can range from a few to dozens or even hundreds.

2. Pustules: In severe cases, pustules can appear on the papules. The surrounding area may have mild redness. After the pustules rupture or are absorbed, temporary pigmentation may be left behind.

3. Comedones: Some patients have a long course of the disease and may develop typical whitehead or blackhead comedones. If squeezed, there may be a discharge of milky white substance. Some acne scars may form deeper concave scars after rupture.

Chinese medicine understanding of acne:

For acne in adolescence, traditional Chinese medicine believes that the liver stores blood and is responsible for regulating emotions. The liver and emotional activities are closely related. "The liver is the general of the body, and planning and worrying depend on it."

Tension is a complex negative emotion. Chronic and long-term mental tension can lead to liver dysfunction, poor qi circulation, stagnation of fire due to depression, and the manifestation of acne. According to the pathogenesis of acne in adolescence, the use of methods to regulate the liver and promote blood circulation has shown good results.

Some experts believe that for adult acne, the kidneys should be regulated first. This is because adult acne after adolescence is closely related to endocrine disorders in the body. Therefore, the treatment should first adjust the endocrine system, with a focus on kidney regulation. Medicinal herbs such as dried lotus, fleeceflower root, ligustrum, and anemarrhena can be used.
