Recovery and Prevention: Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease in Children

December 18, 2023

Children with hand, foot, and mouth disease can usually recover on their own within 7 to 10 days without any complications. They will not have any long-term effects or scars on their skin. The rashes that appear during the later stages may be itchy, but it is okay if they are scratched. Just maintain good hygiene. After the rashes blister, it means that recovery is near and there will be no recurrence afterwards.

Based on previous cases, the complications of hand, foot, and mouth disease are mainly caused by the virus invading the brain or lungs, resulting in meningitis or pneumonia. As long as the doctor's treatment is actively followed, most cases can be cured. To determine whether complications have occurred, pay attention to the following issues:

1. Persistent high fever above 38.5°C that is not relieved by antipyretic medication;

2. Coughing or wheezing;

3. Unusual drowsiness. If any of these symptoms occur, as long as they are detected and treated early, they can be cured.

Hand, foot, and mouth disease is not something to be afraid of. Most children can recover without any long-term effects, and the rashes on their bodies will fade on their own. Therefore, parents do not need to worry too much, just take care of their children's daily hygiene.
