Treating Amenorrhea with Medicinal Diet: Traditional Chinese Medicine Approaches

Menstruation is a special physiological phenomenon in women. Menarche usually occurs between the ages of 12 and 17. If a woman reaches the age of 18 and still has not experienced menstruation, it is called primary amenorrhea. If a woman has established a regular menstrual cycle and experiences three or more months without menstruation, it is called secondary amenorrhea. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) points out that there are many causes of amenorrhea, such as developmental, genetic, endocrine, and psychological abnormalities that lead to blood abnormalities, which can be treated with medicinal diet. Below, we will introduce in detail:

1. Deficiency of lower yuan: Amenorrhea, sore and weak waist and legs, general weakness, forgetfulness, night sweats, decreased sexual desire, dull complexion, dark tongue, and thin, weak pulse. Treatment should focus on nourishing the essence and tonifying the liver and kidneys.

1. Rehmannia Porridge: Take 30-50 grams of glutinous rice, cook it in water until it is cooked, then add 10-20 drops of ginger juice and 10-15 grams of raw Rehmannia juice, stir well and add an appropriate amount of brown sugar. Consume it for breakfast. This is commonly used and effective.

2. Stewed Lean Pork with Turtle: Take 100 grams of lean pork and one turtle, cook them together to make a soup, and season it for consumption. Take it once a day and continue for several times.

3. Ginseng and Walnut Soup: Take 3 grams of ginseng and 3 walnuts, decoct them to make a soup, and consume it. Take it once a day. Continue for 5-7 days.

2. Deficiency of Qi and Blood: Amenorrhea, pale or sallow complexion, fatigue, dizziness, palpitations, shortness of breath, irritability, insomnia, weakness in the limbs, pale tongue, thin white coating, and thin weak pulse. Treatment should focus on replenishing Qi and blood, nourishing blood, and promoting circulation.

1. Astragalus and Ginger Lamb Soup: Take 250 grams of lamb, wash and cut it into pieces, take 65 grams of ginger, wash and shred it, take 30 grams of astragalus and Chinese angelica each, wrap them in a cloth bag, and put them in a casserole with an appropriate amount of water, stew until tender, and remove the medicinal bag. This treatment focuses on replenishing Qi and blood, nourishing blood, and promoting circulation.

2. Osmanthus and Lotus Seed Porridge: Take 30 grams of lotus seeds, remove the skins and cores, take 10 red dates, remove the pits, take 30 grams of osmanthus, and take 60 grams of glutinous rice. Cook them together to make a porridge. Add sugar for breakfast. This is commonly used and effective.

3. Codonopsis and Fructus Ziziphi Soup with Pigeon: Take one pigeon, wash it, take 30 grams of codonopsis, wrap it in a cloth bag, take 30 grams of fructus ziziphi, put them together in a ceramic bowl, and stew them separately. Season the soup and eat the meat. Take it once every other day and continue for 5 pigeons.

3. Stagnation of Qi and Blood Stasis: Amenorrhea, distending pain in the lower abdomen, dull pain in the chest and sides, breast distension and pain, sallow complexion with a purplish hue, irritability, easily angered, pale tongue with purple spots and bruises on the edges, and deep and tight or wiry pulse. Treatment should focus on soothing the liver, regulating Qi, and promoting blood circulation.

1. Turnip Porridge: Take 50 grams of glutinous rice, cook it in water until it is cooked, then add 10-15 grams of turnip seeds, cook until the porridge is soft and cooked, and add a little sugar or salt to season it. Consume it in the morning. Continue for a week.

2. Apricot Kernel and Ox Blood Soup: Take 12 grams of apricot kernels and 200 grams of fresh ox blood (cooked and coagulated), cut into pieces, and add an appropriate amount of water to stew the soup. Season with a little salt and consume the soup and ox blood. Take it once a day and continue for 7 days.

3. Safflower Wine: Soak 50 grams of safflower in 1000 ml of yellow wine for a week before use. Take 50 ml each time and continue for 7 days.

4. Phlegm-Heat Obstruction: Amenorrhea, slight abdominal pain and distention, obesity, increased white discharge, dizziness, nausea, phlegm accumulation, poor appetite, bland taste in the mouth, restlessness, and slipperiness on a pale tongue with a slimy coating, and deep and slippery or wiry pulse. Treatment should focus on resolving phlegm, eliminating dampness, promoting blood circulation, and regulating menstruation.

1. Hawthorn and Mung Bean Porridge: Take 30 grams of barley, 15 grams of fried mung beans, 15 grams of hawthorn, and an appropriate amount of brown sugar. Cook them together to make a porridge. Consume it once a day and continue for 7-8 days.

2. Poria and Safflower Brown Sugar Drink: Take 6 grams of safflower and 50 grams of poria, decoct them in water, and take the juice. Add 100 grams of brown sugar and consume it while warm. Take it once a day. Continue for 5-7 days.

3. Black Bean and Safflower Decoction: Take 30 grams of black beans and 6 grams of safflower, decoct them in water, add 60 grams of brown sugar, and consume it while warm. Take it once a day and continue for a week.

5. Cold Congealing and Blood Stasis: Amenorrhea, cold and painful lower abdomen, chest tightness, nausea, cold limbs, pale complexion, increased white discharge, pale tongue, and deep and tight pulse. Treatment should focus on warming the meridians, dispelling cold, promoting blood circulation, and regulating menstruation.

1. Ginger and Red Date Tea: Take 100 grams of red dates, 15 grams of ginger, and 100 grams of brown sugar. Decoct them in water and drink it as a substitute for tea. Take it until the menstrual flow resumes.

2. Chinese Chive Root Juice: Take 100 grams of Chinese chive roots, wash and chop them, extract the juice, and heat it for consumption. Take it once a day and continue for 5-7 days.

3. Mugwort Leaf and Ginger Boiled Egg: Take 9 grams of mugwort leaves, 15 grams of ginger, and 2 eggs. Add an appropriate amount of water and boil them together. After the eggs are cooked, remove the shells and put them back in to cook for a while. Season the soup and eat the eggs. Take it once a day and continue for 5-6 times.
