Reverse Massage: A Solution for Varicose Veins in Older People

April 9, 2024

Many older people suffer from varicose veins, especially in the lower limbs. So what should older people do about varicose veins? Try reverse massage.

Many older people have poor blood circulation, and the problem of slow venous blood return is particularly prominent. Especially after long periods of sitting or standing, older people may experience symptoms such as leg pain and swelling. Over time, this can lead to the formation of blood clots and varicose veins.

Traditional Chinese medicine experts point out that the basic force behind venous return is the pressure difference created by the tension of the skin and the squeezing action of muscle contractions. However, the skin of most older people is relatively loose and their muscles have decreased in volume and strength, which cannot provide enough power for venous blood return. To improve poor blood circulation, older people should try reverse massage in their daily lives.

Reverse massage has many benefits

The so-called reverse massage is the opposite of the usual massage direction. People usually massage their limbs and body by tapping and kneading in a downward motion. However, reverse massage is more beneficial to health and can achieve better results with less effort. Rubbing the limbs from the extremities towards the body can promote blood circulation, relieve fatigue, and improve flexibility.

Massaging the legs in reverse every day can unblock the meridians in the lower body, promote blood circulation, and help with blood stasis. Moreover, reverse massage can effectively enhance muscle strength, joint flexibility, and coordination, reducing the risk of falls in older people. Massaging the face in an upward motion can counteract the effects of gravity and slow down aging. Massaging the back in reverse can improve chest expansion and promote blood circulation in the respiratory system, enhance the functions of the endocrine and digestive systems, and improve the body's immune system and disease resistance, thereby achieving health and wellness goals.

Massage the limbs along the direction of blood flow

According to TCM experts, older people should first move their limbs appropriately after getting up in the morning, and then sit on a chair and massage their limbs along the direction of blood flow with their hands.

Generally, the major arteries in the limbs run on the inner side of the limbs, with blood flowing from the heart to the extremities. In contrast, the veins mostly run on the outer side of the limbs, with blood flowing from the extremities to the heart.

When massaging the upper limbs, first grasp the left upper arm with the right hand and press and massage from the back of the hand to the shoulder along the outer side of the arm. When reaching the shoulder, turn the left hand over and continue to rub and press the inner side of the left arm to the palm with the right hand from top to bottom. Repeat the rubbing and pressing 20 times. Massage the other side in the same way.

When massaging the lower limbs, use both hands to push and press along the outer side of the right leg from the foot to the outer side of the right inguinal region. Then, simultaneously move and massage along the inner side of the right thigh to the sole of the right foot, and repeat the massage 20 times before massaging the left leg.

TCM experts remind that the force used during massage should be even and moderate. Beginners should use a gentle technique, such as pushing, pressing, rubbing, and kneading. Before massaging, warm up the limbs to prepare the body.

In addition, reverse massage is not suitable for people with osteomyelitis, severe heart disease, and liver or kidney dysfunction.

Precautions for varicose veins

1. Change sitting habits. Change daily habits to reduce prolonged standing and sitting, especially prolonged static standing. When lying down or sitting, elevate the lower limbs appropriately to help increase venous return in the lower limbs.

2. Increase physical exercise. For patients who need to stand for long periods in their daily lives or work, walking exercises can be done more often to increase the pumping effect of the calf muscles and help with venous return in the lower limbs.

3. Avoid injury to the affected limbs. Protect the limbs with varicose veins and avoid injury to them.

4. Wear loose clothing. Lose weight and avoid tight clothes.

5. Pay attention to diet and avoid spicy and greasy foods to prevent aggravating the condition.
