March 28, 2024

Massaging the Tiantu acupoint has the effect of relieving hiccups. Let's follow the editor to learn about the effects and location of the Tiantu acupoint.

  【Location of the Tiantu Acupoint】

  1. Standard location

The Tiantu acupoint is in the neck, on the midline in front, and in the center of the suprasternal notch.

  2. Acupoint selection method

One inch above the Renzhong acupoint, in the center of the suprasternal notch, sit up straight and tilt the head back to select the acupoint.

Quick acupoint selection: Lie on your back, and you can feel a depression directly below the Adam's apple. The center of the depression is the Tiantu acupoint.

  3. Anatomy of the acupoint

Below the Tiantu acupoint are the skin, subcutaneous tissue, the space between the left and right sternocleidomastoid tendons (two sternoclavicular joints), the superior notch of the sternum handle, the left and right sternothyroid muscles, and the pretracheal space.

Superficially, it is innervated by the medial branch of the clavicle nerve, and the subcutaneous tissue contains the sternocleidomastoid and jugular vein arch. Deeply, there are important structures such as the brachiocephalic trunk, left common carotid artery, aortic arch, and brachiocephalic vein.

【Effects and Functions of the Tiantu Acupoint】

  1. Massage to stop coughing

Press firmly on the "Tiantu acupoint" in the center of the sternum for 6 seconds. Whether it is acute cough or foreign body in the throat, it will immediately stop the cough.

During the use of this method, you must exhale while applying pressure. It will take effect after repeating three times. For children, you can reduce the pressure and increase the number of repetitions to achieve the same effect of stopping coughing.

  2. Eliminate Meihuoqi

Ask the patient to repeatedly press the suprasternal notch (Tiantu acupoint) with one finger, with moderate force, for more than 10 times each time, until there is a local sense of acid, swelling, and slight pain.

Continuously apply this method for 2 months, and most patients will see obvious results after about half a month of pressing.

  3. Relieve hiccups

According to traditional Chinese medicine, hiccups are caused by improper diet, which leads to the reverse flow of stomach qi and hiccups. To relieve hiccups, we need to dredge the stomach qi and let the reverse flow of qi return.

Moxibustion on our Tiantu acupoint is also a good method to regulate hiccups. The Tiantu acupoint has the function of guiding qi, and moxibustion can relieve or suppress hiccups by guiding the qi out.

  4. Warm moxibustion for inflammation

When massaging the Tiantu acupoint, you can swallow saliva by making swallowing movements and coordinating breathing. In addition to massage, applying heat to the Tiantu acupoint is also a good method for reducing inflammation.

Use a small cloth bag filled with soybeans, sew it tightly, put it in the microwave and heat it for two minutes, and then place it on the Tiantu acupoint while it is still hot. This is a simple method of warm moxibustion.

  5. Treatment of childhood colds

Due to the small size of infants and young children, parents can gently press the acupoint in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction with the pad of their thumb or index finger, 2-3 times a day, for two minutes each time, to achieve significant results.
