Post-Cupping Precautions: Keeping Safe and Informed

March 9, 2024

Cupping therapy is a traditional Chinese medical treatment that is widely favored due to its safety and lack of side effects. Although many people enjoy cupping, most have limited knowledge about it. Here, we will discuss some post-cupping precautions.

Post-Cupping Precautions

1. Avoid exposure to cold after cupping

After cupping, the treated area should not be exposed to cold air or wind. If cupping is done on the neck, it is advisable to wear a high-collar shirt and minimize exposure to air conditioning. Keeping warm is essential.

2. Avoid scratching the treated area

Some people may experience itching and redness in the treated area after cupping. It is important not to scratch the area to prevent infection.

3. Avoid cold showers after cupping

It is not recommended to take a shower within two hours after cupping. Also, do not use cold water to stimulate the cupped area. The pores will be open after cupping, and immediate showering may allow moisture to re-enter the body, leading to dampness.

4. Handling blisters after cupping

If blisters occur, there is no need to panic. This is mainly caused by prolonged cupping. No special treatment is required, but precautions should be taken to prevent infection and avoid popping the blisters.

If the blisters burst, it is best to use a clean needle to puncture them and let the fluid drain out. Then apply antiseptic solution to prevent infection. Maintain proper hygiene, and the blisters will heal over time.

Causes of Blisters after Cupping

1. Excess dampness in the body

Blisters can occur when there is an excess of dampness and pathogenic factors in the body. Sometimes, small droplets may appear on the cupping site, indicating the presence of dampness.

2. Prolonged cupping time

This varies from person to person and is related to individual constitution. For the first cupping session, a shorter duration is recommended. As the patient's condition becomes understood, the time can be extended accordingly.

3. High temperature of the cups

This is a rare occurrence. In some cases, if the cupping cups become too hot during flash cupping, there is a possibility of blister formation when applied to the skin.

4. Site-specific differences

The occurrence of blisters may vary depending on the location of cupping. Generally, blisters are more likely to form on the back, sides, and buttocks.

Treatment: Small blisters do not require specific treatment; they will heal naturally without complications. For large blisters, use a sterilized needle to puncture them, apply antiseptic ointment, and maintain hygiene. They will heal over time.

Common Acupoints for Cupping

1. Zusanli (ST36)

Zusanli is one of the acupoints used for health preservation in traditional Chinese medicine. It is also known as the "longevity point". Zusanli has a positive effect on cardiovascular function, gastrointestinal motility, endocrine function, and the immune system.

According to Chinese medicine, cupping therapy on Zusanli can not only regulate the function of the digestive system but also treat diseases related to the stomach meridian. Regular cupping on Zusanli can have a beneficial effect on health.

2. Yongquan (KI1)

Yongquan is the first acupoint of the Kidney meridian. It is located at the center of the sole of the foot. Dampness and pathogenic factors tend to accumulate in this area, obstructing the meridian and causing various diseases.

Cupping on Yongquan can help expel dampness and clear the meridian of the Kidney meridian. When the Kidney Qi is strong, it promotes overall vitality, blackens hair, improves hearing and vision, and delays aging.

3. Sanyinjiao (SP6)

Sanyinjiao is the meeting point of the Liver, Kidney, and Spleen meridians. The Liver stores blood, the Spleen governs blood, and the Kidney stores essence. Essence and blood are interdependent. The essence relies on the nourishment of the Spleen, and the Spleen relies on the stimulation of the essence.

Regular cupping on Sanyinjiao can regulate the Qi of the Liver, Spleen, and Kidney meridians, promoting sufficient essence and vitality for overall health and longevity.
