Heel Pain: Causes, Treatment, and Prevention

March 2, 2024

Heel Pain is a common problem for many people. Western medicine believes that heel pain is caused by long-term walking and wear, which can lead to aseptic inflammation in the heel and stimulate compensatory bone growth, forming bone spurs and causing pain. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that the kidneys are responsible for bone marrow production, and kidney deficiency can lead to bone pain. Therefore, heel pain is often caused by liver and kidney deficiency.

Traditional Chinese medicine believes that lumbar scoliosis is the root cause of heel pain. Lumbar scoliosis compresses the lumbosacral nerves that supply the heel, and at the same time, the uneven length of the lower limbs causes uneven force on the heel, leading to local blood stasis and aseptic inflammation, resulting in heel pain. Professionals recommend correcting lumbar scoliosis through massage to balance the force on the heel and relieve nerve compression. Combined with local application of Chinese herbal medicine, it can treat heel pain.

    Lumbar Massage Treatment:

    1. Massage the muscles in the lumbar region, focusing on treating tender points, muscle knots, adhesions, and stiffness, while ensuring relaxation of the lumbar muscles.

    2. Use the inclined plane method to correct lumbar scoliosis.

External Application of Chinese Herbal Medicine

10g Xixin, 15g Baijiezi, 15g Taoren, 15g Honghua, 15g Qianghuo, 10g Chuanxiong, 2 centipedes, 15g Dahuang, 15g Bingpian, 10g Camphor. Grind into powder and mix with white wine to form a paste. Apply the paste to the painful area and use an external plaster for dampness and pain relief. Apply the medicine before going to bed at night and remove it in the morning. Once a day, 10 times as a course of treatment.

    Other Treatment Methods

    1. Rest: If heel pain is caused by prolonged activity or walking, it means that the body is silently protesting. In this case, if you don't rest, the pain will worsen. Therefore, people with chronic heel pain should rest regularly.

    2. Change shoes: It is recommended to wear sports shoes with high soles, high heels, etc., and avoid flat shoes. If you have to wear flat shoes, use shoe pads to increase the height. This can also alleviate the pain.

    3. Cold compress: After intense exercise or labor, use cold compress on the feet to reduce the secretion of inflammatory factors and relieve pain. After two days, you can use hot compress to reduce inflammation and relieve pain.

    4. Medication: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen, are commonly used for heel pain. However, these drugs have side effects, so they should be taken under the guidance of a doctor. Vitamin B6, vitamin C, and calcium can also be taken.

    5. Corticosteroid injection: The effect of corticosteroid injection is not definitive and depends on individual constitution and the severity of symptoms. Some people can remain pain-free for several years, while others may only experience relief for a few weeks. Additional injections may be given based on the situation, and the price is relatively cheap. However, it is not recommended for young women.

    6. Medical plasters: Medical plasters are an external treatment method in traditional Chinese medicine. If used consistently, they can alleviate heel pain. However, they contain many blood activating and stasis resolving ingredients, so they should be used with caution by pregnant women and young women.

    7. Surgery: The main purpose of surgery is to remove bone spurs, but it does not improve local circulation and metabolism. It has good short-term efficacy but may recur in the long term, especially in severely worn areas.
