Understanding Headaches: Causes, Acupoints, and Gua Sha Treatment

Headache is a common disease with various causes. Let's understand the causes of headaches and which acupoints should be scraped for gua sha treatment of headaches.

Causes of Headaches

- Systemic causes: Hypertension, anemia, cerebral hypoxia, heat stroke, etc.

- Cranial trauma: Concussion, contusion, subdural hematoma, intracranial hematoma, sequelae of brain trauma.

- Toxic and drug poisoning: Alcohol, carbon monoxide, organophosphorus, drugs (such as belladonna, salicylic acid, etc.).

- Internal environmental disorders and mental factors: Headaches during menstruation and menopause. Psychosomatic disorders and hysteric headaches.

- Space-occupying lesions: Intracranial pressure increase caused by brain tumors, intracranial metastatic cancer, inflammatory pseudotumor of demyelination, etc.

- Cranial and cerebral infections: Meningitis, encephalitis, brain abscess, intracranial parasitic infections. Acute infections such as influenza, pneumonia, etc.

- Vascular diseases: Subarachnoid hemorrhage, cerebral hemorrhage, cerebral thrombosis, cerebral embolism, hypertensive encephalopathy, cerebral ischemia, cerebral vascular malformation, etc.

Functions of Jinggu Acupoint

- Mainly treats: Headaches, blurred vision, stiff neck, epilepsy, lower back pain, ankle pain, etc.

- Functions: Clears heat and spasms, brightens the eyes and relaxes tendons.

- Clinical applications: Commonly used in the treatment of hypertension, stiff neck, and lumbar muscle strain.

Gua Sha Treatment for Headaches

- Gently scrape around the Jinggu acupoint from top to bottom with a gua sha board, 3 to 5 minutes each time, once a day. It can relieve fatigue, headaches, and blurred vision, and prevent sub-health symptoms.

- Main effects: Promotes blood circulation, clears heat and spasms, brightens the eyes and removes haze. Suitable for headaches, stiff neck, blurred vision, epilepsy, and lower back pain.

- Combination treatment: Jinggu acupoint can be combined with Baihui and Taichong acupoints to treat headaches.

Precautions for Headaches

1. For headaches caused by excess syndrome, eat a light diet. In addition to rice and noodles, eat more vegetables and fruits.

2. For headaches caused by deficiency syndrome, eat nutritious foods such as chicken, pork, pig liver, eggs, and soups made with longan and lotus seeds.

3. If there is heat, eat fresh vegetables, fruits, mung bean soup, and red bean soup.

4. Avoid smoking, alcohol, and foods that can trigger headaches such as rooster, crab, and shrimp.
