Effective Acupoints and Massage Techniques for Treating a Cold

After entering the cold winter, people are more prone to catching a cold due to the temperature. In addition to taking medication, stimulating the body's acupoints can also help alleviate the symptoms of a cold. Below, we will introduce several acupoints and corresponding massage techniques for treating a cold.


1. Yingxiang point

Location: Yingxiang point is located in the nasolabial groove, at the midpoint of the outer edge of the nasal wing, about one centimeter away from the nostril.

Technique: Press the acupoint with the fingertips for one minute.

Effect: Disperses wind-heat and clears nasal passages. It can treat symptoms such as nasal congestion, reduced sense of smell, and difficulty breathing after catching a cold.

2. Taiyang point

Location: Taiyang point is located in the temporal region, in the depression about one horizontal finger away from the outer corner of the eye.

Technique: Rub the Taiyang point with the fingertips 30-50 times, alternating clockwise and counterclockwise.

Effect: Promotes blood circulation and relieves pain. It can alleviate headaches and dizziness caused by a cold.


3. Lieque point

Location: Lieque point is located above the styloid process of the radius, 1.5 inches above the transverse wrist crease. When the tiger's mouth of one hand intersects with the tiger's mouth of the other hand, the depression where the index finger of one hand presses on the styloid process is the Lieque point.

Technique: Press the Lieque point with the thumb of one hand, gently rub, and apply moderate heat. 2-3 times a day.

Effect: Massaging the Lieque point can treat symptoms such as dry cough with little phlegm, headache, chills, and fever. It has the functions of promoting lung function, relieving cough, and transforming phlegm.

4. Fengchi point

Location: Fengchi point is located in the neck, below the occipital bone, in the depression between the upper end of the sternocleidomastoid muscle and the upper end of the trapezius muscle.

Technique: Rub the Fengchi point back and forth with the fingers, and use a massage technique until the local area feels warm and the head and body feel relaxed.

Effect: Refreshes the mind, relieves wind and clears heat. It can treat symptoms such as headache, dizziness, neck pain, and nasal congestion caused by a cold.


5. Zusanli point

Location: Zusanli point is located on the outer side of the lower leg, 3 inches below the Dubi point, one horizontal finger away from the anterior border of the tibia.

Technique: Use the index and middle fingers of one hand and press firmly on the Zusanli point. The muscles in this area are relatively plump, and you may feel a sore or swollen sensation when applying pressure. Start by firmly pressing the point until you feel a heavier sore or swollen reaction, and then slowly rub the point for several tens of times.

Effect: Dispels wind, disperses cold, and strengthens the body's resistance to external pathogens. It can prevent and treat colds.

6. Jianjing point

Location: Jianjing point is located on the shoulder, at the midpoint of the line connecting the prominent vertebra and the outermost point of the shoulder.

Technique: Hold the Jianjing point with the thumb, index, and middle fingers of one hand, with the thumb in the front and the index and middle fingers in the back. You will feel a strong sore or swollen sensation when holding the Jianjing point. Hold and lift the point several times.

Effect: Dispels wind and cold, and relieves surface symptoms. Especially suitable for colds caused by wind and cold.
