Pneumonia in Children: Symptoms, Treatment, and Prevention

  Pneumonia in Children is a common disease in infants and young children, especially in the winter and spring seasons in northern China. It is a common cause of death in infants and young children. Pneumonia is an inflammation of the lungs caused by infection with pathogens or inhalation of amniotic fluid, oil, and allergic reactions, etc. The main clinical symptoms include fever, cough, rapid breathing, difficulty breathing, and wheezing in the lungs.


 

  General Symptoms

 

  Symptoms include fever, refusal to eat, irritability, and wheezing. In the early stages, the body temperature can be 38-39℃, and it can even reach 40℃. In addition to respiratory symptoms, the child may also have symptoms such as listlessness, irritability, loss of appetite, trembling, and diarrhea. Infants often experience refusal to eat, choking while drinking milk, vomiting, and difficulty breathing.

 

  General Treatment

 

  Maintain good air circulation in the ward, maintain the room temperature at 20℃, and the humidity at around 60%. Provide easily digestible food, and regularly turn and pat the child's back.

 

  Today, I will introduce the massage treatment for pneumonia.

 

  Common Techniques

 

  (1) Hold or lie the child on their back, and the parent holds the child's upper limbs, and massage the lung meridian and the six fu organs 300 times each, and massage the three guan points 100 times.

 

  (2) Place the child in the prone position, massage the scapula 100 times, and knead the lung shu and da zhui points for 1 minute each.

 

  (3) Knead the renzhong and fenglong points for 2 minutes each.

 

  Additional Techniques based on Symptoms

 

  (1) Wind-heat invading the lungs type: Fever with chills, slight sweating, headache, slight thirst, cough with rapid breathing, sticky white phlegm in small amount, chest discomfort, red tip of the tongue with thin yellow coating.

 

  Additional techniques: ① Massage the taiyang point 30 times, and massage the three guan points 300 times.

 

  ② Massage the fengchi and jianjing points 10 times each.

 

  (2) Phlegm-heat obstructing the lungs type: High fever with flushed face, extreme thirst, cough with yellow and sticky phlegm, or with blood streaks or rusty phlegm, chest stuffiness, coarse breath, chest pain, red tongue with yellow greasy coating.

 

  Additional techniques: ① Massage the six fu organs 300 times, and massage the heart meridian 100 times.

 

  ② Knead the fenglong point 50 times, and knead the zhongwan point for 3 minutes.

 

  (3) Heat invading the heart and ying type: Persistent fever, worsening at night, irritability, restlessness, occasional delirium or even confusion, shortness of breath, wheezing in the throat, blood in the phlegm, twitching of the limbs, dry lips, dry and yellowish tongue coating.

 

  Additional techniques: ① Massage the six fu organs and the tianhe water point 500 times each, and massage the heart meridian and the liver meridian 300 times each.

 

  ② Knead the quchi point for 1 minute, and massage the yongquan point 300 times.

 

  Prevention

 

  Prevent upper respiratory tract infections, pay attention to strengthening exercise, and choose appropriate exercise methods according to age. When engaging in outdoor activities, wear appropriate clothing. When there is an outbreak of respiratory viruses, do not take children to public places. When someone in the family has a cold, avoid contact with children.
