The Healing Power of Toe Massage: Unlocking Internal Organ Health

February 16, 2024

Everyone knows that a simple way to improve health is foot massage. However, most people would spend money to have someone massage their feet, which can be painful and does not solve the actual health problems. In fact, not only the soles of the feet, even the palms of the hands are related to the internal organs of the body. According to traditional Chinese medicine theory, there are corresponding acupoints on the hands and feet for the five organs and six viscera of the body. The toes are related to the five organs and six viscera through the three yang meridians of the foot: (1) Yangming Stomach Meridian, (2) Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian, and (3) Taiyang Bladder Meridian. The three yin meridians of the foot are: (1) Taiyin Spleen Meridian (earth), (2) Jueyin Liver Meridian (wood), and (3) Shaoyin Kidney Meridian (water). The three yang meridians and three yin meridians of the foot are interconnected. Yangming Stomach Meridian and Taiyin Spleen Meridian (earth) are a pair, Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian and Jueyin Liver Meridian (wood) are a pair, and Taiyang Bladder Meridian and Shaoyin Kidney Meridian (water) are a pair.

The toes are located at the end of the human body, far from the heart, and the blood circulation in the tip of the foot is relatively poor. Pathological changes in the toes can be reflected back to the corresponding visceral organs through the meridians, resulting in various symptoms.

People with weak spleen and stomach often move their toes, which can promote smooth circulation of qi and blood in the body, balance yin and yang, and strengthen the body while dispelling pathogenic factors. By paying special attention to the health care of the second toe, the function of nourishing the spleen and stomach can be achieved.

Toe Massage Techniques

1. Use the toes to grip the ground or grip the insoles, grip for about five minutes at a time. You can do this separately with each foot or simultaneously. Repeat 2-3 times a day.

2. Pinch and knead the toes, preferably for about 15 minutes. It is most convenient to do this before bedtime.

For white-collar workers who sit in the office for long periods of time and lack exercise, this technique is particularly beneficial. It is especially meaningful during the cold season when the circulation of qi and blood is not smooth. In addition, walking also has the same effect, as nearly half of a person's weight is supported by the toes while walking. Walking promotes blood circulation in the toes and the functioning of the meridians, which has certain health benefits.
