The Importance of Gentle and Effective Massage Techniques

February 15, 2024

Question 1: Does the more painful and heavy the massage, the better the effect?

Mr. Liu: Most people have this serious misconception. They think that the more painful the massage, the better the effect. They even specifically look for masseurs with strong strength and heavy techniques. Even if there is a sharp pain or unbearable pain during the massage, they think that it is done correctly. But in fact, if the technique is too heavy, the muscle tissue can be damaged and numbness can occur over time. I once received a male client who had his shoulder and neck heavily massaged for a long time, and no matter how much force I used to massage him, he had no sensation.

Question 2: How to judge whether a massage therapist is reliable and professional?

Mr. Liu: ① Don't pursue excessive force. Massage emphasizes eight words: gentle, penetrating, lasting, and powerful.

To judge the effectiveness of a massage, it should not be measured by whether it is painful or not. Generally, when there is a local feeling of heat or softness during the massage, slight sweating all over the body, redness in the face, and expressions such as burping and yawning, it means that the massage stimulation intensity has reached a effective level.

② Don't focus on massaging one area. A good massage therapist will also massage your head and limbs after massaging the areas you requested, especially the hands and feet, which are very important. Massaging the whole body can promote meridian circulation.

Question 3: Should we occasionally use cupping to remove dampness from the body?

Mr. Liu: I think girls should not use cupping casually. Cupping removes, and nine out of ten girls have less Qi deficiency. Cupping and further removing can aggravate this condition. The relief of pain after cupping is only temporary because it relaxes the surface muscles locally. However, cupping also removes Yang Qi from the body. If you don't have a strong constitution, there is no need to do this. Insufficient Yang Qi can cause other problems. Therefore, after cupping, it is advisable to use moxibustion to replenish the original Qi, as moxibustion is a pure Yang fire that can replenish pure Yuan Qi.

Question 4: Can girls get a massage during their period? Can it relieve menstrual pain?

Mr. Liu: Girls can get a massage during their period! Some simple shoulder, neck, and limb massages can actually promote blood circulation. However, the waist and sacral region should not be massaged, especially the area below the fifth lumbar vertebra. Massaging this area can cause pelvic congestion, aggravating the symptoms of lower back pain. In severe cases, it can cause retrograde menstruation and induce endometriosis and other diseases.

In fact, during painful periods, massaging the right acupoints can be very effective, and the pain can be significantly relieved in 3-5 minutes. Many girls suffer from painful periods, and I have had many clients who had severe menstrual pain. They used to rely on painkillers and brown sugar water, never thinking that massage could also alleviate and cure their pain. But they were all cured by my acupressure technique.

Question 5: Can massage help with insomnia and frequent brain fog due to stress?

Mr. Liu: Nowadays, people are under a lot of stress and often complain about memory loss and brain fog. Western medicine emphasizes that people are born with neurons that help the brain think and remember, but neurons cannot regenerate and fatigue of the brain leads to their death. Therefore, head massage can slow down the aging and death of neurons.

I once had a client who was the owner of an entertainment center. He couldn't remember things in the afternoon that happened in the morning. At first, he came to me just to relax and relieve stress. When he came for the fourth time, he told me that his employees hadn't reminded him of trivial matters recently, as if they naturally remembered them.

Here's a tip: there is a temporal muscle at the temple, which is a fan-shaped muscle. You can massage it yourself to promote active thinking and intelligence.
