Who Should Avoid Massage Therapy: A Guide for Patients

Massage is a method used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat diseases. Its main effects are reducing swelling and pain, promoting blood circulation, and resolving blood stasis. Compared to other methods of treating diseases, massage has fewer side effects. However, not all patients are suitable for massage. In some cases, it is not advisable to use massage to treat diseases. But it should be noted that not everyone is suitable for massage. In certain special circumstances, massage may even affect the body's recovery.


 

People who should not receive massage

 

1. Patients with acute spinal injuries with an unclear diagnosis and symptoms of spinal cord inflammation.

 

2. Patients with acute soft tissue injuries and severe local swelling (such as acute ankle sprain).

 

3. Patients suspected or diagnosed with bone or soft tissue tumors.

 

4. Patients with bone diseases such as osteoarthritis, osteomyelitis, and senile osteoporosis.

 

5. Patients with severe heart, brain, or lung diseases.

 

6. Patients with bleeding disorders.

 

7. Patients with skin injuries or skin diseases.

 

8. Pregnant women who are more than 3 months pregnant.

 

9. Patients with mental illness who cannot cooperate with the doctor.

 

10. Patients with various elbow joint diseases and acute lumbar disc herniation.

 

11. Patients with thrombocytopenic purpura or allergic purpura.

 

12. Patients with extensive skin diseases or ulcerative dermatitis.

 

13. Patients with malignant tumors, malignant anemia, or chronic illness with extreme emaciation and weakness.

 

14. Patients with influenza, Japanese encephalitis, meningitis, diphtheria, dysentery, and other acute infectious diseases.

 

The above 14 categories of patients are not suitable for massage treatment. Massage is not the only treatment method. If you are one of the above patients, it is recommended that you choose other treatment methods.
