10 Groups of People Who Should Avoid Scraping Therapy

February 7, 2024

Scraping therapy, also known as Gua Sha, is one of the traditional natural therapies in China. It involves using tools such as buffalo horns and jade stones to scrape the skin in specific areas, aiming to promote blood circulation and remove stagnation. Regular scraping therapy can help regulate Qi and blood, relieve fatigue, and enhance immune function. However, there are certain individuals who are not suitable for scraping therapy. Let's take a look at the 10 groups of people who should avoid scraping therapy.

1. Individuals with bleeding tendencies, such as those with advanced diabetes, severe anemia, leukemia, aplastic anemia, and thrombocytopenia, should not undergo scraping therapy. This is because the subcutaneous bleeding caused by scraping is not easily absorbed in these patients.

2. Individuals with highly sensitive skin or skin diseases, such as skin lesions, ulcers, unhealed wounds, acne, or infectious skin diseases, should avoid scraping therapy in the affected areas to prevent further injury or infection. Trauma or fractures also contraindicate scraping therapy.

3. Individuals with severe cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, liver and kidney dysfunction, or generalized edema should avoid scraping therapy. Scraping therapy can cause subcutaneous congestion and promote blood circulation, which increases the burden on the heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys, worsening the patient's condition and even endangering their life.

4. Scraping therapy should not be performed on the abdomen or lumbosacral region of pregnant women, as it may cause miscarriage.

5. Individuals who are excessively hungry, full, fatigued, or intoxicated should not undergo gravity or large-scale scraping therapy, as it may cause syncope.

6. Elderly individuals, those who are physically weak, pregnant women, those experiencing heavy menstrual flow or excessive vaginal discharge, and individuals on an empty stomach should also avoid scraping therapy. Those who lack confidence or have allergies, as well as those who have eaten within half an hour before or after a meal, should also refrain from scraping therapy.

7. Acute sprains, painful areas of trauma, or fracture sites should not be subjected to scraping therapy, as it may aggravate bleeding at the site of injury.

8. Individuals with contagious contact dermatitis should avoid scraping therapy, as it may transmit the disease to others.

9. Scraping therapy should not be performed on areas with obvious large blood vessels, as well as on the eyes, ears, nostrils, tongue, lips, anterior and posterior genitals, and the navel (Shenque acupoint).

10. Areas with abscesses, boils, rashes, or unexplained lumps should not be subjected to scraping therapy, as it may cause infection and spread.
