Precautions and Benefits of Foot Massage for Health Care

February 3, 2024

In recent years, foot massage has gradually become a fashionable method of health care. It's enjoyable to invite a few friends to get foot massage together, but there are also some precautions to be aware of.

Massaging the soles of the feet can improve blood circulation, regulate organ functions, and enhance the body's immune system. It is beneficial to the body. However, there are also some precautions to avoid discomfort.

  1. Preparations before massage

The masseur should trim their nails in advance, cutting them short to avoid scratching the skin of others during the foot massage. They should wash their hands with soap and also wash the feet of the person receiving the massage with soap. Afterward, the masseur can apply massage cream or petroleum jelly on the body parts that need massage. This will make the massage smoother and prevent skin abrasion for both the masseur and the recipient.

  2. Relaxation for the recipient before massage

The recipient should soak their feet in hot water beforehand. This can help stabilize their mood and relax. After soaking, the recipient should lie on the bed while the masseur sits beside them with a towel covering their knees. The masseur then places the recipient's feet on their knees.

  3. Identify the pain points

There are many acupoints on the soles of the feet, and before massaging each acupoint, it is necessary to identify the pain points of the reflex area. A checking stick with a pointed end, such as the tip of a pen, can be gently pressed on the area. If the recipient feels a pricking pain, then that acupoint is a pathological one and should be massaged.

  4. Massage for the elderly

The skin of children is thinner and more delicate, while the bones of the elderly are more fragile and prone to fractures. The joints of the elderly are also stiffer. Therefore, when massaging the elderly and children, one should not use excessive force. Instead, pressure can be applied using the fingertips to reduce the intensity and prevent injury.

  5. Do not stop taking medication during foot massage

Some patients with chronic diseases need to take medication. When combining foot massage with medication, one should not stop taking medication without consulting a doctor. The medication should be taken according to the doctor's instructions. If foot massage is performed simultaneously with systematic treatment, the medication dosage and frequency should be reduced based on the doctor's advice only after the condition improves.

  6. Special patients

For certain patients with specific diseases, the massage duration should not be too long. For example, patients with kidney disease, heart disease, or diabetes should not receive massages for more than 15 minutes per session. Of course, if foot massage can be combined with treatment for the disease, it can be chosen as a complementary therapy.

  7. Drink water after massage

After the massage, it is important to hydrate in a timely manner. It is best to drink 500 milliliters of warm water within half an hour. However, patients with edema, kidney disease, or heart failure should not consume more than 150 milliliters of water.

  8. Avoid massage within one hour after a meal

Many people like to get foot massages after meals, but it is not advisable to receive a massage within one hour after eating. During this time, massage can stimulate the stomach. Additionally, if you are in an excited emotional state or extremely fatigued, it is also not suitable to get a foot massage.
