January 25, 2024

Tiantu Acupoint is one of the main acupoints on the Ren meridian in the human body. It has the functions of regulating qi and transforming phlegm, clearing the throat and improving voice, promoting lung qi circulation, and relieving cough. In addition, massaging Tiantu acupoint can also treat plum pit Qi. Now let's learn about the method of massaging Tiantu acupoint to treat plum pit Qi.

  [Acupuncture Method]

  Tiantu acupoint is located in the neck, on the midline, in the central depression of the sternum.

  Method: The patient lies supine, a 28-gauge, 1.5-inch needle is selected, and the acupoint is sterilized. The Neiguan acupoint on both sides is needled first, and then the Tiantu acupoint is needled after obtaining qi;

  First, insert the needle straight in for 0.2 inches, and then insert the needle downward, closely against the back of the sternum, for 1-1.5 inches, until obtaining qi. The patient will immediately feel a refreshing and lubricating sensation in the throat. The needle is left in place for 30 minutes, and during this time, the needle is rotated every 10 minutes to enhance the sensation. This treatment is performed once a day, and 5 treatments constitute one course.

  Plum pit Qi is more common in females, and its onset is often related to emotional stagnation. It manifests as a foreign body sensation in the throat, difficulty coughing up, and difficulty swallowing. Physical examination shows no positive signs. Acupuncture at the Neiguan acupoint can smooth emotions, widen the chest, and promote qi circulation.

  Tiantu is located in the central depression of the sternum, close to the throat. When the needle is inserted, the patient will immediately feel a refreshing and lubricating sensation in the throat;

  This is mainly because needling this acupoint can reduce airway resistance. After needling, the airway resistance during both inhalation and exhalation decreases significantly from an elevated state, thus achieving the effects of regulating qi, smoothing emotions, and promoting lung qi circulation. The combined use of both acupoints achieves a coordinated effect.

  When needling Tiantu acupoint, the depth and angle of needle insertion should be strictly controlled to prevent injury to the lungs and related blood vessels. This method has few acupoints to select, is simple and convenient, and has good therapeutic effects.

  [Pressing Method]

  Instruct the patient to use one finger to repeatedly press on the central depression of the sternum (Tiantu acupoint) at irregular intervals, with moderate pressure. Each press should last for about 10 seconds, until the patient feels a local sour, bloating, or slight pain sensation.

  Continue the treatment for 2 months. Generally, patients will have significant results after about half a month of massaging.

  Tiantu acupoint belongs to the Ren meridian, which is a key point for breathing. It can relieve asthma, clear the voice, regulate qi circulation, widen the chest, transform rebellious qi, calm the mind, and is mainly used for the treatment of various diseases in the throat.

  Replacing needling Tiantu acupoint with finger pressing is safe, convenient, painless, easy to learn, easy to use, easy to promote, and satisfactory in terms of effectiveness, while avoiding the risks of needle insertion.

  If appropriate psychological care is provided in conjunction with the treatment, and patients are advised to consume less fried, stir-fried, and spicy foods, the effect will be even better.

  [Precautions]

  Due to the special local anatomy of this acupoint, the use of acupuncture may lead to accidents due to improper treatment or the special condition of the patient, which greatly limits the use of this acupoint.

  When needling Tiantu acupoint, needle retention and strong stimulation techniques should be avoided to prevent damage to the organs. Extra caution is needed for patients with pulmonary emphysema.
