1. The Early Origins of Massage Massage has a history of nearly two thousand years in China, with its earliest use dating back to primitive society. Our ancestors often experienced pain and discomfort due to injuries in their daily lives and labor. Naturally, they would use their hands or wooden sticks to massage or tap the affected areas, achieving the effects of reducing swelling and relieving pain. Through the accumulation of this experience, our ancestors developed instinctive stroking or massage into a systematic method of treatment and health preservation. 2. The Initial Development of Massage However, massage as a skill was first recorded during the Shang Dynasty. Evidence can be found in oracle bone inscriptions unearthed from the Yin ruins of the Shang Dynasty. The character "拊" (meaning to stroke or pat) is mentioned in the oracle bone inscriptions, and the annotation in the "Shuo Wen Jie Zi" explains: "拊 means to gently pat or stroke."
