Unlocking the Benefits of Zusanli Point: A Guide to Massaging the Longevity Acupoint

January 21, 2024

Zusanli point is the most commonly used acupoint in traditional Chinese medicine. Many diseases can be treated by massaging Zusanli. Ancient Chinese people called it the "longevity point". Let's learn about the benefits of massaging Zusanli.

Method of massaging Zusanli point

1. Location

Located 3 inches below the knee, on the outer side of the leg. To locate the point, place four fingers together (excluding the thumb), measure 4 finger-widths down from the outer side of the knee, between the tibia and fibula bones. The point is 1 finger-width away from the tibia bone.

2. Massage

Massaging Zusanli point for health and disease prevention is simple. Use the thumb or middle finger to press the point for 5-10 minutes each time, with 15-20 presses per minute.

Pay attention to the feeling of soreness and warmth, similar to acupuncture, during each press.

3. Moxibustion

Moxibustion can be done on Zusanli point 1-2 times a week, with each session lasting 15-20 minutes. Use a slightly higher temperature for the moxa stick to make the local skin turn red. Slowly move the moxa stick up and down along Zusanli point to avoid burning the skin.

Benefits of massaging Zusanli point

1. Delay aging in the elderly

Zusanli point is the converging point of the stomach meridian (a meridian that connects all the meridians in the body). It can be used to adjust various diseases caused by disharmony of qi and blood or deficiency of yang qi.

The specific method is to use the thumb or middle finger to press the point for 5-10 minutes, with a feeling of soreness and warmth. Consistent massage can prevent diseases, promote health, and delay aging.

2. Relieve menstrual pain in women

Regular massage of Zusanli point in women can effectively relieve menstrual pain, nourish qi and blood, warm the uterus, regulate menstruation, and alleviate pain.

The specific method is to use the thumb with a little force to massage the point, until a slight soreness is felt. If women have cold uterus, moxibustion can also be used.

3. Relieve stomach pain in men

High work pressure often leads to frequent stomach problems. The operator should stand on the left side of the patient in a sitting position, first press Zusanli point, then massage the point with the tip of the thumb at a 45-degree angle to the skin.

Gradually increase the pressure, massaging for 2-3 minutes. Most stomach pain can be relieved.

4. Improve focus in children

Studies have shown that some children have poor concentration and bad temper due to deficiencies in trace elements (such as zinc and calcium) or high levels of lead in their bodies.

Massaging Zusanli point can improve spleen function, which is helpful in regulating trace element levels, correcting poor concentration, and hyperactivity. Massage for 3-5 minutes, with moderate pressure.

Best time to massage Zusanli point

Press Zusanli point with the thumb or middle finger once a day, for 5-10 minutes each time, with 15-20 presses per minute. Pay attention to the feeling of soreness and warmth similar to acupuncture. This can improve gastrointestinal function, make people energetic and full of vitality.

Although acupoints can treat diseases and promote physical health, it is important to find the correct massage method. During the massage, the palms should be warm and the force should be appropriate. It is not advisable to be too hungry or too full. The best time for massage is on an empty stomach for at least 30 to 60 minutes, preferably in the morning and evening (to refresh the mind in the morning and relieve fatigue in the evening).

In fact, Zusanli point can be massaged at any time, there is no specific time limit.
