Preventing and Treating Summer Pressure Sores: Tips for Personal Hygiene and Lifestyle Habits

January 12, 2024

In summer, it is easier to develop pressure sores, which are often caused by sitting on a hot and humid surface for a long time, leading to local skin congestion and stagnation of heat and moisture.

【Symptoms】

At the early stage, the affected area appears red and itchy, with small papules or nodules. Then, it becomes red, swollen, and painful, resembling a burn. Severe itching can result in the formation of blisters that continue to spread and form a patch of sores.

The initial red papules gradually enlarge and develop into pustules, turning into red, firm nodules. Patients may feel itchy or experience mild pain, but generally do not have systemic symptoms.

Pressure sores can present as nipple-like growths or scar-like hard nodules. They often recur and can last for weeks or months, making them difficult to cure.

Prolonged sitting, poor skin hygiene, scratching, or weakened immune system can all trigger this condition.

【Prevention】

In the hot summer season, people who sit for long periods of time must pay attention to the prevention of pressure sores. This mainly involves personal hygiene and developing good dietary and lifestyle habits. Once pressure sores develop, they should be actively treated.

It is important to maintain personal skin cleanliness and hygiene, avoid scratching and squeezing the affected area. Pressure sores are often related to moisture, heat, sweating, and individual constitution. Therefore, it is necessary to avoid excessive heat and sweating, and avoid wearing tight or hard pants. Additionally, using a breathable cushion (avoiding too hard or too soft cushions, and using a mahjong mat cushion in summer) can improve ventilation and reduce sweat accumulation on the buttocks.

Patients should try to drink less alcohol, eat less greasy and spicy foods, and consume more fresh vegetables and fruits to increase intake of vitamins and maintain regular bowel movements.

【Treatment】

According to traditional Chinese medicine, pressure sores are caused by the stagnation of heat and moisture. The treatment principle is to clear heat, eliminate dampness, and relieve itching.

Consider using traditional Chinese medicine fumigation or sitz bath for treatment.

You can take orally a decoction called "Wu Wei Xiao Du Yin" and use a decoction of "Huang Bo" or "Ku Shen" for fumigation and sitz bath, twice a day for 20 minutes each time. You can also apply a paste made of powdered gallnut and borneol to the affected area once or twice a day.
