Constipation is a common problem that many of us often experience. It can lead to the accumulation of toxins in our bodies, resulting in facial blemishes and dark pigmentation. Pregnant women, in particular, are at a higher risk of experiencing constipation, which can be harmful to both the fetus and the mother. To prevent any harm to the body, we generally recommend using traditional Chinese massage therapy to treat constipation in pregnant women.
Causes of Constipation in Pregnant Women
1. Hormonal Effects
Pregnancy hormones and increased secretion of growth hormone result in delayed transit time of the colon, as well as decreased secretion of gastric hormones.
2. Mechanical Factors
The enlarged uterus can lead to impaired intestinal movement, while restricted movement of the diaphragm and abdominal muscles can cause a lack of bowel movement.
3. Increased Colon Water Absorption
Increased secretion of renin-angiotensin-aldosterone leads to slowed colonic motility and increased absorption of water in the colon, resulting in hard stools.
4. Dietary and Activity Factors
Inadequate dietary fiber intake, limited mobility in late pregnancy, and decreased colonic motility can all contribute to constipation.
How to Determine Constipation in Pregnant Women
1. Frequency
Having three bowel movements per day or three bowel movements per week is considered normal. It's important to note that not having a bowel movement in a day does not necessarily indicate constipation, and there is no such thing as "fecal impaction."
2. Color
Normal stool color is brownish-yellow or golden. If stool suddenly becomes white (clay-like), black (tar-like), or red (bloody), and this continues for several days, it's important to seek medical attention.
3. Shape
According to the Bristol Stool Chart, normal stool consistency should fall between types 3 and 5, resembling a banana or sausage. However, occasional variations in stool shape are also acceptable. If stool shape consistently deviates from the norm, it may indicate an abnormality in the body.
