The Complex Causes and Treatment of Tinnitus: A Comprehensive Guide

January 9, 2024

Tinnitus is the result of various pathological changes in many diseases that affect the auditory system. Its causes are complex and its mechanisms are unclear. It is mainly characterized by the subjective sensation of sound in the ear or head without corresponding external sound sources or electrical stimulation. In clinical practice, it is both a symptom associated with many diseases and the initial symptom of some serious diseases. Tinnitus is the most significant early sign of sudden hearing loss, which is a result of various pathological changes in the auditory system. 80% of patients with sudden hearing loss have experienced tinnitus before.

Sudden hearing loss, as the name suggests, refers to a sudden loss or complete loss of hearing in one ear. In addition to this, sudden hearing loss is also accompanied by uncomfortable sensations such as tinnitus, ear fullness, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting.

Traditional Chinese medicine can treat various diseases through massage of specific acupoints, and tinnitus can also be treated through massage.

1. First, gently massage the Tinghui acupoint (located in the lower front of the tragus, level with the small notch, at the depression when opening the mouth) for about 5 minutes, about 350-400 times.

2. Strike the Tian Gu acupoint 50 times. Rub your palms together to warm them up, cover your ears with your palms, place your ten fingers on the back of your head, and then tap below the occipital bone with your index finger stacked on your middle finger, producing a sound similar to drumming in the ear.

3. Cover both ears with the palms of your hands that have been rubbed warm, completely sealing the ears, and then suddenly release the palms. Repeat this process 30 times.

4. Use your index finger and thumb to knead the auricle from top to bottom, and then from bottom to top, repeatedly knead the auricle until there is a feeling of warmth in both ears, kneading the auricle 100 times in total.

5. Massage the Hegu acupoint (extend your arm, palm facing down, use the thumb and index finger of the other hand to pinch the highest point of the muscle) 80 times.

Patients with tinnitus treated with acupoint massage can massage once in the morning and once in the evening. In addition, if massage can be performed promptly when tinnitus occurs, the effect will be more significant. If patients can persist in doing this for a long time, the phenomenon of tinnitus will definitely improve significantly.

If you still don't know how to massage to treat tinnitus, you can also seek the help of a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner to massage for you. You can also learn from the practitioner so that you can massage yourself in the future.

Effective methods to relieve tinnitus:

1. Avoid noise. Wearing earplugs while operating machinery can be helpful.

2. Wear hearing aids. This is because the brain can concentrate on processing external sounds without being affected by internal tinnitus.

3. Avoid stimulants. Caffeine, nicotine, and decongestants can worsen tinnitus.

4. Increase background noise. Music, fans, or other background sounds can shift the brain's attention.

5. Behavioral therapy. Relaxation techniques can help reduce or control tinnitus.

6. Medications. Sedatives or antidepressants can be effective when tinnitus affects sleep or causes severe anxiety.

In addition, tinnitus patients can eat more foods that are beneficial for tinnitus, such as walnuts and kiwis, and avoid eating spicy and irritating foods, ensuring sleep and a regular lifestyle.

Pay attention to three types of tinnitus sounds to beware of sudden hearing loss

Different tinnitus sounds are actually different "signals". When the inner ear has a problem, it often produces a buzzing sound. When the nervous system has a problem, tinnitus is usually a screaming sound. Tinnitus caused by problems in the central nervous system is generally called cranial tinnitus. If these three types of tinnitus occur, you must go to the ear, nose, and throat department of the hospital for a detailed examination.
