Understanding the Principles and Precautions of Scraping Therapy in Traditional Chinese Medicine

January 6, 2024

Traditional Chinese medicine scraping therapy adjusts the balance of yin and yang, improves the body's resistance to diseases, and mainly plays a role in expelling evil from the surface, awakening the mind, promoting meridian circulation, promoting Qi and blood flow, and eliminating dampness. However, scraping therapy is not suitable for everyone, and it is not suitable for all diseases. It should be used with caution in the elderly and frail, as well as in young children who are weak and deficient.

1. Pain does not necessarily indicate effectiveness

Scraping therapy is not more effective just because it is more painful, and it is not better if the scraping marks are black and purple. In fact, when the scraping area turns slightly red or purplish red, it can be stopped. If the scraping area, strength, etc. are not properly controlled, blindly pursuing the color of the scraping marks will not only be ineffective but also cause skin and flesh damage.

Doctors say that some patients can't produce scraping marks. Apart from incorrect methods, it may also be caused by frequent scraping, severe illness, or weak physique, making it difficult to produce scraping marks. Excessive force should be avoided to prevent injuries. Scraping therapy should follow the principles of differentiation and treatment. Since scraping therapy is a stimulating treatment, improper operation can worsen the condition or cause other discomforts.

2. Follow the principles of differentiation and treatment

Take the common cold as an example. Taking medication and combining it with scraping therapy can have a significant effect. The main scraping areas are the Tianzhu acupoint, bilateral Fengchi acupoints, Jianjing acupoint, Fengmen acupoint, the inner edge of bilateral scapula, Yintang acupoint, and the Wind Mansion acupoint in the chest. After scraping, drinking a cup of hot herbal tea and sweating can make the whole body feel comfortable. If the cold is mainly characterized by fever, it is not suitable for scraping therapy alone and should be combined with medication. Headaches should not be treated by scraping the head, and foot pain should not be treated by scraping the foot. Patients with headaches must first exclude organic diseases in the head, so it is best to go to the hospital for a clear diagnosis.

3. Master the intensity of stimulation in scraping therapy

To prevent accidents during scraping therapy, doctors need to pay special attention to mastering the intensity and strength that patients can bear. In addition, doctors should take preventive measures and understand the contraindications of scraping therapy: fasting and excessively fatigued patients should avoid scraping; patients with weak physique and loss of skin elasticity should avoid scraping; patients with abscesses, ulcers, sores, or tumors in specific areas should avoid scraping; patients with heart disease or edema should avoid scraping; patients with hemophilia, bleeding disorders, bleeding spots, and other bleeding disorders should not receive scraping therapy. Patients with low blood pressure, low blood sugar, excessive weakness, and special sensitivity to pain should receive gentle scraping.

Scraping therapy, like acupuncture and massage, stimulates the acupoints of the human body, but only with different tools. During the scraping process, patients may experience dizziness, pale complexion, palpitations, and cold sweats. At this time, scraping should be stopped immediately, the patient should lie flat, drink some warm water or warm sugar water, rest for a while, and the discomfort will soon improve. If it still doesn't work, the patient can be urgently treated by scraping the Baihui acupoint, Renzhong acupoint, Neiguan acupoint, Zusanli acupoint, and Yongquan acupoint with a scraping board.
