Protect Your Liver with Acupoint Massage: Taichong, Xingjian, and Dadun

January 4, 2024

Chinese medicine believes that the liver belongs to the wood element. If the liver qi is excessive or if there is liver qi stagnation, it can easily damage the liver and lead to the occurrence of certain diseases. You can protect your liver by massaging specific acupoints.

1. Taichong acupoint

The "Taichong acupoint" is located 4 cm above the space between the big toe and the foot dorsum. It is considered the most important acupoint in the human body. Some people compare it to the exhaust pipe of the body because it is the original and influential acupoint of the liver meridian. It is also the fire acupoint of the liver meridian and can help disperse liver qi and liver fire. Therefore, massaging the "Taichong acupoint" can effectively eliminate stagnant qi in the body.

2. Xingjian acupoint

The "Xingjian acupoint" is located between the big toe and the second toe. It is a fire acupoint. As the liver belongs to the wood element and wood generates fire, if there is excessive liver fire, it can be relieved by stimulating the "Xingjian acupoint". In spring, when liver fire is excessive, it can cause symptoms such as toothache, swollen cheeks, mouth ulcers, nosebleeds, and blisters on the tip of the tongue. Massaging the "Xingjian acupoint" can help disperse the fire from the heart meridian.

3. Dadun acupoint

The "Dadun acupoint" is the first acupoint of the liver meridian. It is located beside the nail seam on the inner side of the big toe. "Dun" means thick, and "Dadun" means particularly thick. The "Dadun acupoint" is also a well acupoint, which represents the source. It is located on the border of the nail of the big toe, closest to the second toe. Massaging or applying moxibustion on the "Dadun acupoint" can clear the liver and improve vision, making your mind clear and refreshing.
