Relieving Sciatica: The Power of Moxibustion on Jinggu Point

December 27, 2023

Patients with sciatica have a deep understanding that sciatica is really painful. Sciatica is a syndrome characterized by pain along the sciatic nerve pathway and distribution area. So how should it be treated? Below, I will share a case of traditional Chinese medicine moxibustion treatment of sciatica on the Jinggu point, and what are the effects and functions of the Jinggu point?

Jinggu Point

What is sciatica?

Typical symptoms include: backache, continuous dull pain in the lumbar region, aching legs, stiffness in the lower back, shooting pain in the buttocks, radiating pain in the foot, disappearance of tendon reflex, and tenderness in the sciatic foramen. Sciatica is more common in middle-aged and elderly men, mostly on one side. The onset is sudden, with initial feelings of backache and stiffness in the lower back. Sometimes there may be brief pain in the lower limbs during walking and exercise in the weeks before the onset. The pain gradually intensifies and develops into severe pain.

The pain starts in the lower back, buttocks, or hips, and radiates down the back of the thigh, popliteal fossa, lateral side of the calf, and dorsum of the foot. It is characterized by burning or stabbing pain on top of continuous pain.

Jinggu Point

A case of traditional Chinese medicine moxibustion treatment of sciatica on the Jinggu point

Mr. Xie, a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner, used moxibustion on the Jinggu point, which is the sub-point of the bladder meridian on the painful side, for about 15 minutes per moxibustion session. After three days of moxibustion on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, the symptoms were significantly alleviated, but he still felt pain on Monday morning.

He then switched to moxibustion on the original point of the bladder meridian, the Jinggu point. After one moxibustion session, the symptoms were significantly relieved. Previously, he had difficulty squatting in the bathroom, but after moxibustion, he could squat easily immediately. He also no longer felt pain when sleeping at night.

To facilitate moxibustion, starting from the second day of moxibustion on the Jinggu point, he switched to warming moxibustion with a warm moxibustion box for 25 minutes per day. Since his tongue coating seemed very damp, after warming moxibustion on the Jinggu point, he also warmed moxibustion on both sides of the Zusanli point for 25 minutes each (one moxibustion session was just enough for these three points, so there was no waste).

After moxibustion on the Jinggu point for three days, the symptoms were even more significantly reduced. The bladder meridian at the affected area was no longer painful when stimulated, and the effect was very good. After seven days of moxibustion, there was no pain at all, and everything returned to normal. It can be said to have had an immediate effect.

The sciatica was cured, and warming moxibustion was done on the Zusanli point for six days. The thick dampness on the tongue coating had significantly decreased, and the symptoms of acid reflux had also improved. He felt much more comfortable, and his complexion had improved.

In this way, sciatica was cured with just ten moxibustion sessions, and the stomach problem was also relieved. The cost was less than five yuan, truly simple, convenient, low-cost, effective, green, and efficient!
