What's wrong with the rib pain?

May 14, 2023
Sometimes we inadvertently collide with the chest at some point in our lives or experience a vague pain at the rib cage in the chest after exertion, many people will feel doubtful; what is going on with the rib cage pain?

Costochondritis

Sometimes, sudden onset of rib pain for unknown reasons may be caused by costochondritis, which is usually caused by heavy lifting or sharp twisting of the chest. Most of the pain is in the front of the chest, sometimes light and sometimes heavy, and can increase with turning and coughing, deep breathing, and upper limb activities. Suggestions: If you have similar symptoms as mentioned above, you can go to the hospital for X-ray, CT and other examinations to confirm the diagnosis.

Rib fracture

The rib pain that usually occurs after playing or accidentally hitting the chest may be caused by rib fracture. It often occurs in middle-aged and elderly people with osteoporosis, and the fracture is caused by direct or indirect violence from external forces. Localized pain in the rib area is the most obvious symptom of a rib fracture and worsens with coughing, deep breathing or body movement such as rotation. Suggestion: If a chest collision causes localized pain at the rib cage, it is important to pay attention to it, and a detailed examination such as X-ray chest film or CT should be performed at the hospital to confirm the diagnosis.

Intercostal neuralgia

Intercostal neuralgia can also be considered as intercostal neuralgia, both secondary and primary. Intercostal neuralgia refers to frequent pain occurring in one or several intercostal areas, with episodes of exacerbation; it is generally associated with viral infection, mechanical injury and foreign body compression. Intercostal neuralgia is a frequent pain in one or several intercostal areas with an increase in intensity; it is usually associated with viral infection, mechanical injury and foreign body compression. Suggestions: Generally, the main cause of intercostal neuralgia should be clarified before treatment, and then appropriate methods of treatment should be used; generally, drugs, physiotherapy, acupuncture, tui-na, etc. can be used.

Coughing and pulling

When we cough induced by certain factors such as upper respiratory tract infection or bronchitis, a forceful cough causes the lungs to contract and expand violently causing them to rub against the ribs and causing pain. Or when coughing hard, the air pressure in the chest changes and impacts the pleura, diaphragm, and intercostal muscles causing painful symptoms in the ribs. Suggestion: Treat the cough promptly and the rib pain will disappear naturally after the cough stops.
