Effectiveness of melatonin

April 30, 2023
Melatonin is an amine hormone secreted by the pineal gland in mammals and humans, which is capable of brightening a melanin-producing cell, hence the name melatonin. With years of research progress, people found that melatonin has many efficacy and effects.

Delay aging

Free radicals may be generated during enzymatic and non-enzymatic reactions in the human body, and free radicals are closely related to aging, which can lead to the destruction of cell structure and thus affect the aging of the body. Melatonin protects cell structure by scavenging free radicals, antioxidant and inhibiting lipid peroxidation reaction, preventing DNA damage and reducing the level of peroxide in the body. This has the effect of slowing down the aging of the body.

Improve sleep

Melatonin plays a role in improving sleep by regulating the endocrine system, shortening the time of waking and falling asleep before bedtime, improving sleep quality, significantly reducing the number of awakenings during sleep, prolonging the light sleep phase, decreasing the threshold of waking up the next morning, and having a strong function of adjusting jet lag. And the hypnotic effect is relatively ideal, with very little toxicity and almost no side effects as long as it is not taken in large quantities for a long time.

Fight against tumors

Melatonin has a significant protective effect against chromosome damage in human peripheral lymphocytes caused by gamma rays (150 cGy) from 137Cs, and there is a dose-effect relationship. It has an antagonistic effect on physical and chemical mutagenicity and carcinogenicity produced by free radicals. In addition, melatonin also has a protective effect against mutagenicity induced by autotaxin C. Melatonin reduces the formation of DNA adducts induced by chemical carcinogens (safrole) and prevents DNA damage. Melatonin promotes the production of endogenous granulocytes and macrophages for accumulation factors through bone marrow T-cells, which can be used as an adjuvant therapy for tumors.

Immune regulation

Melatonin is closely related to the immune function of the body, and inhibition of melatonin synthesis is associated with reduced humoral and cellular immune effects in humans. Numerous tests have shown that melatonin can enhance the immune function of the body, including increasing the weight of the thymus, improving the proliferative response of lymphocytes, activating the release of interleukins and interferons from Th cells, and thus increasing the activity of NK cells and other immune components. Melatonin may also exert immunomodulatory effects through other endocrine systems, such as the thalamus-pituitary-adrenal.
