Can dysmenorrhea affect pregnancy

April 17, 2023
Menstrual cramps are a common symptom for many women, and there is a lot of concern about whether they can affect pregnancy. The following information on whether menstrual cramps can affect pregnancy will be helpful to you.

Classification of dysmenorrhea

Dysmenorrhea is divided into primary dysmenorrhea and secondary dysmenorrhea. If the dysmenorrhea is not accompanied by obvious pelvic organic disease, it is primary dysmenorrhea; the dysmenorrhea caused by pelvic organic disease is secondary dysmenorrhea. Common diseases causing secondary dysmenorrhea include endometriosis, adenomyosis, acute and chronic pelvic inflammatory disease, submucosal myoma, pelvic congestion syndrome, uterine malformation, etc.

Primary dysmenorrhea does not affect pregnancy

Primary dysmenorrhea often occurs in young women, starting after menarche (6-12 months), and the incidence starts to decrease after the age of 30. The pain often starts before or after the imminent menstruation, and the pain is often spasmodic, mainly concentrated in the lower abdomen proper. This primary dysmenorrhea is a normal physiological phenomenon that usually does not affect pregnancy.

Secondary dysmenorrhea can affect pregnancy

Secondary dysmenorrhea is often associated with different symptoms, such as abdominal distension, lower abdominal cramping and traction pain. The pain mostly occurs before the onset of menstruation, peaks during the first half of menstruation, and then decreases. Secondary dysmenorrhea is usually caused by organic pelvic disease, which often affects pregnancy if left untreated.

What are the causes of secondary dysmenorrhea?

Many pelvic organic diseases are associated with dysmenorrhea, such as endometriosis, adenomyosis, pelvic infections, endometrial polyps, submucosal fibroids, uterine adhesions, cervical stenosis, uterine malformations, pelvic congestion syndrome, intrauterine device, hymenal atresia, and vaginal transverse septum. Among them, endometriosis is a common disease that triggers secondary dysmenorrhea and infertility.

Tips

If you suspect that you are suffering from secondary dysmenorrhea, you should not use drugs blindly, but should seek immediate medical treatment, as delayed treatment is likely to lead to infertility.
