What is the cause of haze

April 16, 2023
Recently the topic of haze in the online discussion is very hot, different from the previous flirtatious tone, more and more people began to seriously face the hazy weather, what is the haze, what are the causes of the formation of hazy weather?

Car exhaust

Large vehicles that use diesel are the "worst offenders" in terms of fine particulate emissions, including large buses, shuttle buses of various units, and large transport trucks. Although small cars using gasoline emit gaseous pollutants such as nitrogen oxides, they are easily converted into secondary particulate pollutants on foggy days, adding to the haze.

Coal combustion

The burning process of coal will release many fine particles, i.e. PM2.5, which will aggravate the air haze.

Industrial Emissions

Industrial production emissions are also an important source of haze. For example, industrial furnaces and boilers in metallurgical and electromechanical manufacturing industries, as well as a large number of exhaust gases emitted from the combustion of paint spraying and building materials production kilns.

Construction sites and road dust

Based on the revitalization of the economy, roads and subways are being built all over the country, coupled with the real estate bubble, land is being dug everywhere to build tall buildings, and the dust from these construction activities is also a cause of hazy weather.

Climate Impact

Hazy weather formation and climate change also have a certain relationship; for example, in northern China, precipitation is scarce, dust is more serious, if coupled with weak winter winds, haze stagnation, aggravating hazy weather.

Components of haze

The three main components of haze are sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and respirable particulate matter; the first two are gaseous pollutants and the last one, particulate matter, is the culprit that aggravates hazy weather pollution. They combine with the fog to make the sky instantly gray and hazy. The abbreviation for particulate matter is PM, and the high-frequency term PM2.5 now refers to pollutant particles less than 2.5 microns in diameter. The particles themselves are both a pollutant and a carrier of toxic substances such as heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The main causes of hazy weather are the following.
