Notes on IUD Removal

April 13, 2023
What to pay attention to when removing an IUD is a concern for most women. Some people are only concerned about what to pay attention to after IUD removal, but in fact, there are also corresponding issues to pay attention to before and during IUD removal.

Choose a regular hospital

A few women choose private clinics for the sake of cheap, these private clinics may have irregularities, which can easily cause cross-infection and lead to a variety of diseases (for example: vaginitis, pelvic inflammatory disease, urethritis, etc.). So be sure to choose a regular medical institution for the removal of the ring.

Choosing the time for IUD removal

Women who are not menopausal usually go to the hospital within 3-5 days after menstruation; women who have been menopausal for more than 6 months or whose menstrual cycle has become longer should take out the ring in time to avoid denaturation or failure of the ring in the uterus. Women who have been on the ring must pay attention to the time the ring exists in the body, generally speaking, the metal ring can be stored for about 20 years, the V-ring of the cross gauge can exist for about 7-10 years, and the T-ring of the copper sleeve can exist for about 10-15 years.

Preparation before IUD removal

Before IUD removal, you should check whether there is any inflammatory infection. If there is any infection (e.g. cervicitis, vaginitis, endocervicitis, etc.), you should first undergo anti-infection treatment and wait for the inflammatory infection to be cured before removing the IUD. Therefore, do not wash your vagina 3 days before IUD removal, do not use vaginal medication, take a shower and change into clean clothes one day before IUD removal, and prepare sanitary napkins on the day of IUD removal, because there will be a small amount of bleeding after IUD removal. In addition, you should abstain from food and water for 4 hours before the procedure.

Precautions for IUD removal

Keep a good mood

IUD removal is only a minor surgery, it will be a little painful and women who are sensitive to pain may feel nervous and emotional anxiety. You can do deep breathing exercises to relax your mind when removing the IUD, and it will not take too long for a skilled doctor to remove the IUD.

Precautions after IUD removal

Keep the vulva hygienic

After IUD removal, it is important to keep your vulva hygienic to avoid infection. If the ring is removed in summer, you should change your underwear and sanitary napkins in time; wash your vulva with warm water once a day, and do not use gynecological lotion when washing. In addition, you can follow the medical advice to take anti-infection drugs in appropriate amounts.

Pay attention to the cold and keep warm

After IUD removal, your body is weak, so you should pay attention to prevent cold and keep warm to avoid getting cold. If the IUD is removed in winter, pay attention to keep warm and do not wear tight pants. For the first two days after IUD removal, pay attention to bed rest, and do not go out for the first week to avoid wind and cold.

No sexual intercourse

Do not have sex for two weeks after IUD removal to avoid inflammation and prevent future gynecological diseases, such as cervicitis, vaginitis, pelvic inflammatory disease, etc. If you need to get pregnant, you should wait for six months after the IUD removal before you can get pregnant. Go to the hospital for a checkup 3 months after the removal of the ring to make sure that the endometrium has fully recovered and to prevent the uterus from not fully recovering, which may lead to fetal malformation or miscarriage after pregnancy.

Observe the bleeding situation

After the IUD is removed, you should pay attention to the bleeding situation and seek medical attention in time if you find any special situation. When the IUD is removed, the endometrium and cervix are irritated and there may be a small amount of vaginal bleeding or bloody leucorrhea (this is due to the irritation of the endometrium or cervix by the foreign body, which is normal), usually disappearing in about 1-2 days. If the bleeding is heavy (greater than normal menstrual flow) or prolonged (greater than three days), you will need to go to the hospital for examination and treatment.

Pay attention to food and nutrition

After IUD removal, you can take some high-protein foods (beans, eggs, milk, etc.) to speed up the repair of damaged tissues in the uterus; eat more blood-supplementing foods (brown sugar, cinnamon, red dates, black beans) to reduce the symptoms of anemia after IUD removal; eat less spicy, stimulating and cold foods.
