Why does snot have a different color

April 11, 2023
We all know that a runny nose is a very common symptom in the early stages of a cold. Different colds may cause different colors of runny nose. In addition, we can also determine whether our body is suffering from other diseases by the color of the runny nose.

Yellow nose

If you have a yellow nose, you may consider that you have a wind-heat cold. Wind-heat cold will cause the nasal cavity to secrete a lot of nasal mucus and turn yellow due to bacterial infection. It is also important to note that a yellow nose may also be caused by chronic sinusitis, allergic rhinitis and other diseases. If you have a yellow nose for a long time, accompanied by dizziness, sneezing, nasal congestion and other discomforts, it is best to seek medical examination in time.

Pus nasal discharge

Generally, in the late stage of cold, it is easy to have pus nasal discharge. In addition, if you like to eat spicy and irritating food, it is easy to aggravate the internal heat in the body and lead to pus nasal discharge. If the lung heat is serious during the cold and the heat is not cleared in time, it will also lead to a runny nose. In addition, it should be noted that a prolonged runny nose should be considered as a possibility of paranasal sinusitis.

Clear nasal discharge

At the beginning of a cold, it is easy to have a runny nose. It is especially easy to occur in patients with wind-cold colds. It is also called acute rhinitis and is accompanied by nasal congestion, sneezing, coughing and other symptoms, mild fever, fatigue and aches and pains. If the runny nose is accompanied by nasal congestion, itchy eyes and nose, and continuous sneezing that lasts for several hours and disappears on its own, it may be caused by allergic rhinitis.

Green runny nose

Yellowish-green runny nose or crusty nose may be caused by atrophic rhinitis. This is because the nasopharynx is too dry, resulting in reduced secretion from the mucus glands in the nasal cavity, and the secretions are not easily excreted, resulting in a large amount of accumulation in the nasal cavity, forming a crust and causing nasal congestion. Severe cases may also be accompanied by nasal bleeding and unpleasant odor emitted.

Red nasal discharge

If you find red nasal discharge, you should consider that it is caused by blood mixed with nasal discharge. It may be caused by trauma or surgery to the nose, inflammatory infection or systemic diseases such as hypertension, blood disorders, vitamin deficiency, etc. In addition, older people who often have red nasal mucus should consult a doctor to prevent malignant tumors in the nasal cavity.

Black nose

People who often blow black noses are not caused by physical diseases, but they must pay attention to the protection of the nasal cavity. Especially workers in coal mines, inhaling black dust for a long time can lead to a black runny nose, which will affect the respiratory system in the long run.
