Are electronic cigarettes harmful

April 8, 2023
E-cigarettes are considered to be the best choice for quitting smoking and replacing cigarettes, which look and taste similar to traditional cigarettes and even taste better. Therefore, under the promotion and marketing of some manufacturers, the market of e-cigarettes is gradually rising and sought after by the majority of smokers. However, e-cigarettes are not really a natural, safe, non-polluting and green alternative to cigarettes. Some people even reveal its harm to the human body, more than the traditional cigarette! So what are the hazards of electronic cigarettes that cannot be ignored? Let's analyze it below!

Nicotine causes cancer

Nicotine will cause acute symptoms such as vasoconstriction, rapid heartbeat, rising blood pressure and rapid breathing when it enters the body. Some studies have found that nicotine can prevent chemotherapy drugs such as paclitaxel from killing lung cancer cells, thus achieving the role of protecting cancer cells. Another serious hazard of nicotine is addiction, making people dependent, which is one of the reasons why it is difficult to quit smoking.

Propylene glycol irritates the respiratory tract

E-cigarettes contain large amounts of propylene glycol as a humidifier to achieve the effect of swallowing clouds, a substance that accounts for 90% of the ingredients in e-cigarettes. Because the substance can easily irritate the respiratory tract and cause some acute symptoms, it is even more harmful than traditional cigarettes.

Propyl alcohol damages the lungs

The electronic cigarette device heats up too quickly, and in the process also produces a highly toxic molecule called acrolein. Inhalation of acrolein is highly likely to damage the respiratory tract and cause laryngitis, chest pressure, and bronchitis. Long-term smoking of acrolein in e-cigarettes can lead to pneumonia, pulmonary edema, shock, nephritis, and heart failure.

Other carcinogens

In addition to these three major carcinogens, e-cigarettes also contain trace amounts of carcinogenic ammonium nitrite, although businesses claim that e-cigarettes are completely free of tar and suspended particles, but the fact that there are no such substances is unknown.

E-cigarettes can cause lung disease

In 2012, the Center for Global Tobacco Control's lead researcher Konstantin Vadavas and his colleagues, who are now the first to study the effects of e-cigarettes on lung disease, said that e-cigarettes can cause lung disease. Vadavas and his colleagues observed changes in the respiratory tract of 30 healthy smokers after smoking e-cigarettes. The study found that after five minutes of smoking e-cigarettes, their lungs showed signs of constriction, and in combination with other tests, they also found signs of inflammation. This short-term lung reaction, while not asserting its damage to the body, can show signs of inflammation after just a few minutes. We can imagine what serious effects prolonged smoking of e-cigarettes can have on the body.

WHO does not approve of e-cigarettes

In 2008, the World Health Organization has made public statements on the efficacy of "e-cigarettes" to quit smoking, saying that it has no scientific evidence to prove that e-cigarettes are completely effective smoking cessation tools, nor does it recognize that e-cigarettes are a green, safe, legal, alternative to cigarettes, to help smokers quit smoking health products. Some countries are even a total ban on e-cigarettes, such as Canada, Switzerland, Brazil, Argentina and so on.

Advantages of e-cigarettes over traditional cigarettes

E-cigarettes are atomized tiny particles of water vapor that do not produce secondhand smoke, which is its recognized progress relative to traditional cigarettes. And the content of nicotine in the smoke cartridge is not set in stone, divided into high, medium and low concentrations, the principle of which is to gradually help smokers to quit their dependence on nicotine. Manufacturers are also looking at this point, vigorously promote the electronic cigarette "do not need to quit smoking, you can quit smoking" advantage.
