Waiting to Eat: The Timing of Breakfast after a Morning Run

October 18, 2023

There is an increasing number of people choosing to go for morning runs. Many of them need to go to work after their run, so they often choose to bring breakfast with them to eat at the office. But how long should you wait to eat breakfast after a morning run?

Can you eat breakfast immediately after a morning run?

It is not advisable to eat breakfast immediately after a morning run.

During the morning run, a large amount of blood is distributed to the exercise system, while the blood supply to the digestive system is reduced accordingly, leading to a decrease in its digestive function. Even though the morning run has ended, this condition persists for a short period of time. Eating breakfast immediately after a morning run is not conducive to food digestion and absorption, and can have negative effects on the body. In the long term, it may even cause gastrointestinal diseases such as indigestion and worsening of chronic gastritis.

How long should you wait to eat breakfast after a morning run?

The intensity of a morning run is not usually too high, typically lasting for about half an hour to an hour. Therefore, it is generally recommended to wait for about 30 minutes after a morning run before eating breakfast. If the intensity is higher, the rest time should be extended accordingly. During a morning run, the brain cortex responsible for coordinating myocardial movements is stimulated, while other parts of the body are relatively inhibited. This weakens the peristaltic force of the intestines and reduces the secretion of digestive juices, which is not conducive to food absorption.

Can you eat breakfast before a morning run?

It is acceptable to have a light breakfast before a morning run.

Before a morning run, it is acceptable to have some carbohydrate-rich foods such as bananas and small breads. It is also recommended to drink some lightly salted water, as they can provide sugar to the body, which can burn fat and prevent dehydration during the morning run. However, foods like nuts, fruits, and vegetables can cause stomach cramps and are not suitable to eat before a morning run. High-protein and greasy foods have a slow digestion process and are also not suitable to eat before a morning run.

What should you eat after a morning run?

After a morning run, it is important to replenish energy. Therefore, you can eat foods that are high in protein, such as eggs, milk, soy milk, and fish. It is also recommended to eat foods that are rich in starch, such as rice and steamed buns. Additionally, you can also have some fruits in moderation as they can provide the necessary vitamins to the body.
