Ze Xie: Traditional Chinese Medicine for Diuresis and Swelling

Ze Xie is a commonly used traditional Chinese medicine for diuresis and reducing swelling. It is derived from the dried rhizome of Ze Xie and can be used to treat various diseases. In addition, Ze Xie can also be used as a food ingredient. Below are a few recommended methods of using Ze Xie as food!


1. Ze Xie Pork Bone Soup

Ingredients: 80g of lentils, 80g of barley, 12g each of Poria cocos and Ze Xie, 5 red dates, 500g of pork bones, 3 slices of ginger.

Method: Wash all the ingredients separately and soak the medicinal herbs. Remove the pits from the red dates. Crack the pork bones. Put all the ingredients into a clay pot, add 2500ml of water (about 10 bowls), bring to a boil, then simmer for about 2 hours on low heat. Add salt to taste. Serves 3-4 people.

Efficacy: This method can help to clear heat, eliminate dampness, moisturize, and nourish the body.

2. Ze Xie Porridge

Ingredients: 10g of Ze Xie, 100g of rice, a little sugar.

Method: Clean the Ze Xie and put it in a pot. Add an appropriate amount of water and simmer to extract the juice. Add rice and cook until done. Add sugar and simmer for another minute or two. Take 1-2 servings daily.

Efficacy: Regular consumption of this porridge has good therapeutic effects on difficult urination, edema, diarrhea, turbid urine, excessive vaginal discharge, phlegm retention, and nocturnal emission and dizziness caused by insufficient kidney yin and excessive fire.


3. Ze Xie Crucian Carp Soup

Ingredients: 800g of old winter melon, 1/2 fresh lotus leaf, 12g each of Poria cocos and Ze Xie (available at Chinese medicine stores), 80g of Coix seed, 1 crucian carp, 100g of lean pork, 3 slices of ginger.

Method: Wash all the ingredients. Cut the winter melon, including the skin and seeds, into pieces. Soak the Chinese medicinal herbs and Coix seed. Clean and gut the crucian carp, fry it until slightly yellow, and then add a little water. Put all the ingredients into a clay pot, add 3000ml of water (about 12 bowls), bring to a boil, then simmer for two and a half hours on low heat. Add salt to taste. Serves 3-5 people.

Efficacy: Consuming this soup can help to clear heat, alleviate summer heat, and dispel dampness.

4. Long Dan Ze Xie Wine

Ingredients: 50g of Gentiana scabra, 30g of Angelica sinensis, 20g each of Scutellaria baicalensis, Gardenia jasminoides, and Rehmannia glutinosa, 15g each of Bupleurum chinense, Akebia quinata, Plantago asiatica, and Ze Xie, 10g of licorice, 1600ml of white wine.

Method: Prepare using the hot soaking method. Take 20-30ml three times a day. Take it at the end of the last week before menstruation.

Efficacy: Mainly used to treat symptoms of dysmenorrhea in women.
