Using Cupping Therapy: Methods and Precautions

January 17, 2024

A cupping therapy is a method that uses hot water to heat the cup, creating negative pressure and allowing it to adhere to the skin. When using it, make sure to wipe or shake off the water droplets on the cup to avoid burning the skin. There are several specific methods for using cupping therapy:

1. Boiling water method: Place an intact bamboo cup in an aluminum pot and boil it for 1-3 minutes. Then, use tweezers to hold the cup upside down, shake off the water, and quickly place it into a towel held in the other hand to dry it. Immediately place the cup on the desired treatment area, where it will adhere to the skin. This method is commonly used in folk medicine.

2. Steam method: Place a water kettle over a high flame and bring the water to a boil, allowing steam to escape from the spout. Hold the bamboo cup over the steam for 1-2 seconds, aligning the cup's mouth with the steam. Then, quickly remove the cup and place it on the desired area, where it will adhere to the skin. This method is simple and safe, and is one of the most recommended methods. However, do not leave the cup over the steam for too long, as it may become too hot and burn the skin.
