Enhancing Therapeutic Effect: The Needle-Cupping Method

December 5, 2023

The needle-cupping method refers to the practice of first applying acupuncture at a certain point, and once a certain level of stimulation is achieved, leaving the needle in place and then using a cupping jar over the needle to enhance the therapeutic effect. When performing this method, special attention should be paid to ensure that the needle handle is not too long, in order to avoid the risk of the needle touching the bottom of the cup when suction is applied, which could result in the needle penetrating too deeply into the body. This method should not be used on the chest or back.

This method can also be performed by first applying acupuncture at the acupoint and immediately removing the needle, and then cupping at the needle hole to draw out a small amount of blood or tissue fluid. This can increase the level of stimulation and improve the therapeutic effect of acupuncture, making it suitable for stubborn cases of bi pain. It can also be used by disinfecting the area and using a plum blossom needle to tap the skin until it becomes slightly red or has a slight bleeding, and then cupping is performed and left in place for 5-10 minutes. This method is suitable for conditions such as numbness and paralysis.

The combination of acupuncture and cupping enhances the level of stimulation on the meridian acupoints, and is commonly used for more stubborn conditions, such as what Traditional Chinese Medicine refers to as "bi zheng" (painful obstruction syndrome). Examples include stubborn rheumatic pain, old musculoskeletal injuries, sciatica, and lumbar disc herniation.

When using the needle-cupping method, attention should be paid to mastering the technique in order to prevent the needle from becoming stagnant or breaking.
