Deer Tail Medicine in Qinghai. It refers to the tail of deer species Cervus elaphus Linnaeus or Cervus nippon Temminck. During collection, after the deer is slaughtered, ① the deer tail is cut off from the junction of the tailbone and the tail, washed, and hung in a ventilated place to air dry. The commercial medicinal material is called "Mao Luwei" (Hairy Deer Tail). ② The newly cut deer tail with fur is wrapped in a wet cloth or wet sack, kept in a temperature of about 20℃ for 2-3 days, then taken out, the long fur is removed, soaked in cool water for a while, taken out, the fluff and skin are scraped off, the residual meat and excess tailbone are removed, the tail root and the detached skin are sewn together with a string, the tail is straightened, hung in a ventilated place, and air dried. [Processing Method] 1. Deer Tail: Take the deer tail with fur, burn off the fur, brush and wash it clean, cut it into small pieces, and dry it.
2. Wine-infused Deer Tail: Take small pieces of smooth deer tail, mix it evenly with yellow wine, keep it moist, steam it in a steamer until fully cooked, take it out, and dry it. For every 100kg of clean deer tail pieces, use 20kg of yellow wine.
[Characteristics of Medicinal Pieces] Deer tail is irregularly shaped with varying sizes, the surface is purplish-red or purplish-black, smooth and glossy, with irregular broken sections. It is hard in texture and has a slight fishy smell. Wine-infused deer tail resembles a deer tail, with a slightly darker color and a slight smell of wine.
[Processing Effects] Deer tail has a sweet and slightly bitter taste, and a warm nature. It has the functions of nourishing the kidney yang and tonifying essence and qi. It is used for kidney deficiency with spermatorrhea, lumbago, and dizziness and tinnitus. When combined with Eucommia ulmoides, Psoralea corylifolia, Lycium barbarum, Dodder seed, Astragalus propinquus, Codonopsis pilosula, Atractylodes macrocephala, Achyranthes bidentata, and Cervus nippon, it is used to treat kidney deficiency with lumbago, spermatorrhea, and dizziness and tinnitus (Sichuan Materia Medica).
[Processing Research] Empirical evidence suggests that the tail of the Cervus elaphus deer is superior to that of the Cervus nippon deer. Experimental results have shown that the testosterone and estradiol content in the Cervus elaphus deer tail is about 1 time higher than that in the Cervus nippon deer tail. The ethanol extract content of the Cervus elaphus deer tail is about 1 time higher than that of the Cervus nippon deer tail, and there is no significant difference in the amino acid and inorganic element content.
