Exploring the Medicinal Properties of Qingfengteng: A Promising Herb for Rheumatism and Joint Pain

February 4, 2024

Qingfeng vine, also known as Qingteng, is mentioned in the book "Compendium of Materia Medica". It is the vine stem of the plant Sinomenium acutum (Thunb.) Rehd et Wils. of the Aristolochiaceae family, as well as the variety cinereum Rehd.et Wils. The vines are harvested in late autumn or early winter, bundled or cut into long sections, and dried in the sun.

[Processing Method] Take the original medicinal material, remove impurities and residual leaves, wash and slightly soak, cut into thick slices, and dry.

[Characteristics of the herbal medicine] It is a long oval or irregular thick slice, with a gray-yellow or light gray-brown surface. The wood has a radial texture, commonly known as "wheel pattern", with many small holes. The pith is pale yellow-white, and the periphery is green-brown to brown. It is light in weight, hard, and brittle. It has a slight odor and a bitter taste.

[Processing effect] Qingfeng vine has a bitter and pungent taste, and is neutral in nature. It enters the liver and spleen meridians. It has the functions of dispelling wind and dampness, promoting the circulation of meridians, and relieving pain. It is mainly used for rheumatism, joint swelling, and paralysis itching. For example, it is used in the treatment of various types of rheumatoid arthritis, lumbago, and numbness of limbs in rheumatoid arthritis pain tablets (Tianjin Pharmaceutical Standard). The processing makes the medicinal material clean and facilitates the adjustment and dissolution of ingredients.
