Thick Bark: A Medicinal Wonder from Magnoliaceae Family

December 12, 2023

Thick bark, also known as Huopi, Chuanpu, and Ziyu Huopi, is recorded in the "Shennong's Materia Medica". It is the dried bark, root bark, and branch bark of the Magnolia officinalis Rehd. et Wils. or the Magnolia officinalis Rehd. et Wils. var. biloba Rehd. et Wils., which are plants of the Magnoliaceae family. The bark is harvested from April to June, and the root bark and branch bark are directly air-dried. The dried bark is boiled in boiling water for a short time, then placed in a damp place to "sweat" until the inner surface turns purplish-brown or brown. It is then steamed, taken out, and rolled into a tube shape for further drying.

【Processing Method】 1. Thick bark in "Jin Kui Yu Han Jing": "Cut diagonally like preserved meat." "Lei Gong Pao Zhi Lun": "Remove the coarse bark...use fine filing." "Ben Jing Feng Yuan": "Soak in boiling water several times, then cut." Currently, the original medicinal material is taken, the coarse bark is scraped off, washed clean, soaked until moist, cut into strips, and dried.

2. Ginger Thick bark in "Lei Gong Pao Zhi Lun": "If used in a soup, use 8 liang of natural ginger juice, and roast for one sheng as a dosage." "Xiao Er Yao Zheng Zhi Jue": "Remove the coarse bark, apply ginger and roast." "Jiang Ji Fang": "Remove the bark, cook with ginger juice." Currently, clean the strips of thick bark, mix them with ginger juice until moist, put them in a pot, stir-fry over low heat until dry, take them out and let them cool. Alternatively, take fresh ginger slices, add water to make a decoction, take another piece of scraped thick bark, tie it into a bundle, put it in the ginger decoction, repeatedly moistening it until it is thoroughly soaked, and cook until the ginger decoction is absorbed. Take it out, cut it into strips, and dry it. For every 100kg of thick bark, use 10kg of fresh ginger. Or take clean fresh ginger slices, add an appropriate amount of water, cook to make a juice, remove the residue, and spray the ginger juice onto the strips of thick bark until thoroughly moistened, and then air-dry.

3. Thick bark made with medicinal juice: take clean thick bark slices, mix them with the following medicinal juices while hot, so that they are evenly absorbed, then sun-dry or dry at a low temperature, and sieve out the ashes. For every 100kg of thick bark slices, use 10kg of fresh ginger or 1.7kg of dried ginger, and add about 15kg of water. Cook for 1 hour, then add 5kg of perilla leaves and cook for another 15-20 minutes, remove the residue and take the juice. Alternatively, take the original medicinal material, soak it in water for 3-6 hours, put it in a copper pot, add perilla leaves and fresh ginger, add enough water to cover all the ingredients, cook for 8 hours, simmer for 16 hours with residual heat, take it out, scrape off the bark, and cut into slices; then take the medicinal juice filtered after removing perilla leaves and fresh ginger, pour it over the thick bark slices, let it absorb, and then sun-dry. For every 100kg of thick bark, use 5kg of perilla leaves and 10kg of fresh ginger.
