Hu Tuizi Leaf: Properties and Medicinal Uses

Hu Tui Zi Ye, also known as Pu Tui Ye, is recorded in the "Compendium of Materia Medica". It is the leaf of the plant Elaeagnus pungens Thunb. from the family Elaeagnaceae. It can be harvested all year round and used fresh or dried.

[Processing Method] Take the original medicinal material, remove impurities, wash and cut into shreds, and dry.

[Appearance of the prepared slices] Irregular thread-like shapes. The upper surface is light green or yellowish-green, with a glossy appearance, and scattered with a few black-brown scales. The back of the leaf is covered with silver-white star-shaped hairs, and scattered with numerous black-brown or light brown scales. The texture is leathery. It has a slight aroma and a slightly astringent taste.

[Processing Effects] Hu Tui Zi Ye has a sour taste and a slightly warm nature. It has the functions of relieving cough and asthma, stopping bleeding, and detoxification. It is used for cough due to lung deficiency, wheezing, coughing up blood, vomiting blood, external bleeding, abscess, and painful hemorrhoids. It can be decocted with Zi Wan and Bai Bu for the treatment of bronchial asthma (Qingdao Herbal Manual); it can be stewed with rock sugar and hot water for the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis with bleeding (Fujian East Materia Medica). Processing makes the medicinal material clean and facilitates blending and the dissolution of components.
