Lingmao Xiang, also known as Lingmao Yin or Lingmao Xianggao, is mentioned in "Compendium of Materia Medica". It is the secretion of the scent gland pouch of the large civet (Vierra zibetha Linnaeus) or the small Indian civet (Viverricula indica Desmarest), both of which belong to the family Viverridae. Generally, the civet is restrained and the external genitalia are washed. The opening of the scent gland pouch is opened, and a small spoon made of horn is inserted into the scent gland pouch in the perineum, and the thick liquid secretion, namely Lingmao Xianggao, is scraped out. It is taken every 2 to 3 days, and about one qian (3.75 grams) can be obtained each time. The scent gland pouch of artificially bred civets can be cut off in winter when their skins are taken or accidental deaths occur. The scent gland pouch is then air-dried or dried in a stove, or the scent paste in the scent gland pouch is dug out. This kind of scent is called "dead scent".
【Processing Method】Take the raw material, remove impurities, and grind into powder when needed.
【Appearance of Medicinal Pieces】Fresh Lingmao Xiang is a thick liquid resembling honey, white or yellowish-white in color. Over time, the color gradually changes from yellow to brown, becoming a soft ointment. It is insoluble in water, partially soluble in ethanol, and ignites and burns with a blue flame. It has a fragrant smell, with a slight urine odor when smelled up close, and a musk-like scent when smelled from a distance. It tastes bitter.
