Dried Mylabris: An Ancient Insect Medicine

December 4, 2023

Mylabris, also known as Banmao, Huabanmao, or Bao, is a dried whole body of Mylabris phalerata Pallas or M.cichorii Linnaeus, which are insects belonging to the family Meloidae. It is mentioned in the book "Shen Nong's Herbal Classic". The insects are captured in the morning when the dew is not yet dry during the summer and autumn seasons, and then they are suffocated or scalded to death and dried.

[Processing Methods] 1. Raw Mylabris: "Su Shen's Good Formulas": "Remove the head, wings, and legs, and grind." "Confucianism and Family Affairs": "Remove the legs and wings." Currently, the original medicinal material is taken, and the head, legs, wings, and impurities are removed.

2. Stir-fried Mylabris with rice: "Lei Gong's Roasting Theory": "When preparing Mylabris, stir-fry it with glutinous rice and small hemp seeds until the rice turns dark brown. Remove the hemp seeds and then remove the wings, legs, and head. Wrap the Mylabris with the remaining blood and hang it in the northeast corner overnight before using it in the morning." "Tai Ping Holy Prescriptions": "Stir-fry it with glutinous rice until it turns slightly yellow, and then remove the wings and legs." Currently, clean Mylabris and rice are placed in a pot and heated over low heat. Stir-fry until the rice turns brownish yellow, then remove it and let it cool. For every 100kg of Mylabris, use 20kg of rice.

3. Licorice and glutinous rice processed Mylabris: Soak the clean Mylabris in licorice soup and dry it. Then stir-fry it with glutinous rice in a pot until it turns golden yellow. Repeat this process for 10 times. For every 1kg of Mylabris, use 0.2kg of licorice and 20kg of glutinous rice.
