Ligubone: The Medicinal Benefits of Leopard Cat Skeleton

November 30, 2023

Ligubone is recorded in the book "Famous Doctors' Records". It is the skeleton of the leopard cat (Felis bengalensis Kerr), a member of the cat family. It can be hunted and captured in all four seasons. After slaughtering, skinning, and dissecting the abdomen, the bones are removed and air-dried.

[Processing Method] 1. Ligubone: Take the original medicinal material and remove impurities and tendons.

2. Processing method for Ligubone in the "Emergency Prescriptions from the Elbow": "Moxibustion." "Emergency Golden Prescription": "Roasting, pounding, and sieving." "Food Therapy Materia Medica": "Roast it until it becomes fragrant and powdery, and take it with wine." "Taiping Holy Prescriptions": "Roast until it turns crispy and yellow." Currently, clean Ligubone is taken and fried with vegetable oil until it becomes crispy or coated with butter and baked with smokeless fire until it becomes yellow and crispy. It is crushed when used. For every 100kg of Ligubone, use 100kg of vegetable oil or 200kg of butter.

[Appearance of Herbal Pieces] Ligubone resembles leopard bone but is shorter. The weight of the entire skeleton is about 0.7kg. It is white in color and has a pungent odor. Processed Ligubone retains the shape of the original medicinal material, with a whitish or pale yellow color, slightly oily texture, and a faint fragrance.

[Processing Function] Ligubone has a spicy, sweet, and warm nature. It has the functions of dispelling wind and dampness, relieving stagnation, and detoxifying and killing parasites. Processed Ligubone has a crispy texture, making it easy to crush and remove the fishy smell, making it easier for patients to take. It is used for wind-heat arthralgia, heart and abdominal pain, difficulty swallowing, malnutrition, scrofula, intestinal wind hemorrhage, hemorrhoids, and malignant ulcers. It can be combined with Chinese angelica, astragalus, southern leaf stem, and Japanese catnip to treat joint pain caused by wind (Guangxi Medicinal Animals). Roasted wild Ligubone into powder, warm wine for oral administration, treats unpredictable abdominal pain (Simplified Health Prescriptions). Combining Ligubone with aconite and coptis treats cold and heat scrofula (Liu Juanzi's Ghost Prescription). Combining Ligubone with mulberry twigs and aconite treats chronic intestinal wind and continuous rectal bleeding (Taiping Holy Prescriptions).

[Processing Research] Ligubone appeared with the processing method "roasting" in the Jin Dynasty (Emergency Prescriptions from the Elbow). In the Tang Dynasty, there were "roasting, pounding, and sieving" (Emergency Golden Prescription) and "roasting until it becomes fragrant powder" (Food Therapy Materia Medica). The method "roast until it turns crispy and yellow" (Taiping Holy Prescriptions) was used in the Song Dynasty. Currently, the main processing method is frying with oil.
